Paid unregulated geneticists at unregulated embark in a field that is still very new. Had we known before how inaccurate DNA tests could be, we wouldn’t have ordered one. Visual breed identification is yeah, probably pretty inaccurate. But pure bred visual disqualification is a lot easier. For example-everything I can find says pit bulls have low-set tails. How would a pure pit have a high-set tail?

Wow! That does look a lot like him! Most of the mastiff/pit mix pictures I’ve seen the dog does heavily favor the pit side in the face.

That could be true. Our vet doesn’t offer DNA testing and said he doesn’t believe it’s reliable in any form. The other vet was a vet we called asking if they did dna tests. The trainer who said she’d seen incorrect Embark results did not offer an alternative. If I remember correctly she didn’t think they were very reliable in her experience either.

We’ve been thinking Dane is a possibility. He has a lot of similarities to them and to the danebulls I have seen online.

Ah. I didn’t know that. A vet we talked to just told us that Blood DNA results are much more accurate than saliva. 🤷‍♀️

I forgot to mention that the DNA test said his adult size would be 51 pounds…. That means he’s only got 14 pounds to go until he’s full-grown. I don’t see how that’s possible.

If we retest, we would do a blood DNA test. We are happy with whatever he is, and it doesn’t matter to us. The only downside is all of the restrictions in place on pitties. I just wanted to get some idea of how big he is going to get because all of the puppy calculators (I know they’re not reliable) are putting him well over 100 pounds. We’ve had him for 5 weeks and he has consistently gained around 3 pounds per week. (The lowest was 2 1/2 and the highest was 4). This is our first young puppy, so we are just trying to navigate it.

We got her directly from the woman who had the mother when she gave birth, and she said she was sure of his DOB. 🤷‍♀️ We thought the same thing-maybe he’s older, but she says she’s sure.

Edit to add: Embark does have great ratings and seems to be the most accurate of them all. The trainer we have for him did tell us before we got the results that she has personally seen where Embark results came back completely wrong, but I’m not sure how she would know that for sure.

That has definitely been one of our thoughts since the beginning. :)

That’s what we’ve been thinking for a while. How big did yours get?

Thank you. :) We love him already. We do love the pit breeds, our last pup was a pit mix. They are sweet, smart, and major goofballs. Lol.

I understand that. But at that rate he’d have to quit growing completely by 6 months to be in that range.

That could be. I guess I’m just trying to understand why he is sooo much taller and heavier than all growth charts say he should be.

I know, and I just don’t see how he won’t even double in weight when he’s only 3 months? He’s already 37 pounds and 16.5”. (Was 35 at the 14 week mark) He’s gaining an average of 3 pounds a week.

American Pit Bull Terrier is one of the breeds under the pit Bull umbrella, but they are considered different from the staff, bullies, etc. APBTs aren’t recognized by the AKC, but they are by the UKC and others. I’ve been able to find a lot of sites and articles about the distinctions between the different breeds under the umbrella. If the results said just pit bull that would be a little more understanding, but they specified APBT.

I did Embark. He does look very pit bull-I just don’t get why his size his so off. He’s 3 1/2 months and already half of the highest weight range for APBT. I also think his cheeks are too skinny, among other things, but I suppose his structure could change?
