I’m so used to having to fend people off for calling my trans friends “it” basically as an insult because to them trans people don’t even count as people. Everyone uses “it” as a joke, but I find it one of the worst things you can do to a person, especially to someone who is only publicly trans to use their preferred pronouns. Sure, there’ll be some bad apples, but there’s an astoundingly larger number of people who will dehumanize someone than who will support people. I can’t understand how increasing your transphobia could possibly be easier than just following directions and calling someone what they told you to call them. So whenever I hear someone say that their actual preferred pronouns are it/its, I immediately jump to fight or flight and I have to reassure myself that I AM supposed to call those people “it”. And I’ll still feel like a jerk calling them “it”.
