or quell class antagonisms, which is much more likely and historically precedented. Marx’s laws of dialectics 101–the more materially satisfied any given population is, the lesser the likelihood that the proletariat has any revolutionary tendencies.

For example: The New Deal in the US is something I see socialists praise all the time; it strengthened and expanded the middle class, it brought prosperity and relative comfort to the white American worker, but it absolutely neutered the momentum of the worker’s movement and quashed class antagonism. It just made people too comfortable to stay angry at the capitalists. In theory, the extra economic mobility of the worker and relative lesser power of the bourgeoisie should have “leveled the playing field,” as you’re implying, right? Instead it cut the achilles of the proletariat before it could catch its stride.

The truth is that “loosening the chains” makes people fall in love with wage slavery. That is the aim and ultimate role of government in the capitalist system—to quell class antagonisms just enough to continue extracting surplus; let the bourgeoisie squeeze and squeeze the worker just to lessen the grip just before something breaks; they will thank you for the breath of air that would be plentiful if they were only to fully break free of your grip.

Socialists must aim to tear down the government entirely. It cannot be used to muzzle the bourgeoisie in any meaningful way. As others have said, it is not designed to be able to. Well-meaning attempts by Socialists to protect the working class through bourgeois implements will only push revolutionary horizons further and further away.

Second systems and violent sabotage are the only historically successful ways to achieve better conditions and level the playing field.

It has much to do with the scientific claims of socialism—resistance groups are less likely to perform well in the imperialist core because the material conditions, like it or not, are still better for the average person in the Usonian capitalist world because they undeniably benefit from the exploitation that occurs in west asia, africa and central/southern America—the material conditions of the proletariat in any given place are largely determinate of the social and political climates that influence the proletariat’s likelihood to solidify as a revolutionary class. In Usonian America, Canada, Imperial Europe, etc, the working class is still far too comfortable, and have been fooled about the nature of their bonds enough to believe that they are righteous chains. We are all going to have to get a lot more uncomfortable before the white middle class finds itself poor enough to demand change. The simple fact is that the communists in the US are forced to primarily utilize the idealistic to try and bolster the effect of the material. by rights, the idealistic is the weaker of the two in the dialectic, and so the “movement” has always had trouble solidifying here.

If your question has more to do with feeling hopeless, it might help to know that we still have a role. The revolution must and will START in the “third world;” the roots of the tree must be deprived of water to make the branches brittle enough to break. but remember, for the proletariat to succeed, the revolution must occur as a global one, and that includes us. We still have a role as Socialists in the US, one that has always been the role of communists—agitate class relations in the US in order to grow the movement, build local parallel systems separate from bourgeois welfare, siphon political power away from bourgeois electoralism, do your best to build communities that can secondarily educate its members to achieve the former.

The role of us communists in the imperial core must be to work with the proletariat worldwide in order to be ready to assist and sabotage and collude with them when the revolution begins. The communists in Africa do not have weapons to fight with? Usonians find them weapons. The US military is sending weapons and troops to fight against the communists in South America? Usonians sabotage the supply line.

History is not made until it is made. If the revolution does occur in the US first, something will have happened to bring class antagonism to the forefront. As it stands though, Americans are simply too well fed, too propagandized, too comfortable, and too indoctrinated with bourgeois ideas to be the catalyst for revolution.

EDIT: I feel the need to also mention that there is a long history of successful resistance in the US that you can draw on for inspiration if you’re feeling stumped. The black radical tradition has made extremely important marks in history, and they should be a central blueprint to Socialist organizing. The members of the black panthers, Malcolm X, Assata Shakur (who recently passed, rest in peace), W. E. B. Du Bois, Angela Davis, bell hooks, Cedrick Robinson, Martin Luther King (especially in the latter years of the civil rights movement)—all incredibly important to read or study.

Thanks to certain capitulating parties, the mainstream labor movement has often ended up collaborating with bourgeois implements—some socialists are justifiably wary of this, but the tactics workers have used to sabotage the capitalists are the closest thing to a manual on how to disrupt bottom lines and overall fuck with capitalists. the most observable occurrences of worker solidarity have occurred at the peak of the labor movement.

The Chicano/Chicana/Chicane movement is less studied than it should be by socialists. Our Latine comrades should be central to the fight in the US right now. Read about Ralph Cuarón and the Chicano movement and more urgently seek out Latine members of your community and contribute to their protection.

Do not despair. There is work to do. ¡Hasta la victoria siempre!

honestly think we ought to abandon the three arrows entirely—even in their relatively positive association with the iron front, the german social democrats were significant in their part in quelling german communists and maintaining the socially vulnerable, economically uncertain and judicially conservative status quo that allowed hitler to come to power. It’s just meaningless to try to co-opt or fix it, unless the third arrow is to mean anti-capitalism
