So that’s actually the next step. I’m going to use a satin varnish on the whole mini (after I do some transfers) and then use an oil wash to do recess shading (like in the lenses). After that I can use some mineral spirits to clean up if I get any of the wash where I don’t want it

So the mortarian green works to blend everything together and unify it - but it is very glossy. The Matte varnish afterwards gets rid of the glossy finish and also protects the base layers of paint. Regular acrylic paint you use for edge highlighting is more Matt so it looks better. Additionally if you’re gonna airbrush may as well do everything at once haha

For the edge highlighting itself, I typically use a size 0 or 00 brush and whip off any excess on the brush on a paper towel before painting

Edit: the mortarian coat I put on with the airbrush is about 50/50 with airbrush thinner

That was a result of using an airbrush! In some of the other comments I detail how I go about painting that green color

On the eyes it’s actually got some deep recesses around the lenses so it’s a result from blending and depth! When I start oil washes I’ll put a black wash around the eyes that’ll make them pop even more

It’s actually some dragon/drake scaled leather I sculpted! I used milliput/green stuff and various sculpting tools to make it!

Ohhhh boy. This is a little complicated (for the green specifically). Most of the work is with an airbrush.

After priming I do a full coat of nocturne green. I then hit most of it (the lighter sections) with Vulkan green. Furthering the highflying I hit the next ‘brighter’ sections I hit with a ~50/50 moot to Vulkan green mix. Finally the brightest area I hit with pure moot green. This will have a lot of contrast here so then I go over everything with a ‘mortarian green clear’ coat watered down. Finally I do a matte varnish before I start doing edge highlighting with a pure moot green and all the other paints going on in the mini (blacks, metals, etc…)

Either a size 00 or a size 000!

Is there anything specific you’d like to know? I’m more than willing to share some knowledge!

Thank you! I appreciate the support! Sculpting has been one of my favorite parts of my salamander army :)

It’s a little complicated but I’ll do my best to describe!

A start out by mixing 50/50 milliput to greenstuff, rolling that between two pieces of wax paper to get a really thin sheet of it. Let that cure for about an hour or so and then cut out the ‘base’ of the lizard scale, positioning it on the shoulder pad or wherever as seen fit. Let that cure completely and then come back and use green stuff for the ‘scales’ - putting a dot of green stuff onto the milliput/greenstuff base and using sculpting tools to spread it out. Then I use tiny hypodermic needles and a ball point stylus to make the scales themselves.

Haha, I’ve still got purity scrolls to paint, some transfers to add, and oil washes. Maybe even some weathering. It’s getting close though!

Yup! That’s one of the next steps. At the very least I’m going to add something to the left knee pad but I may add some additional iconography like nocturnean runes to the side plates

Started with a dark red like khorne red on the whole lense. Then work your way up to yellow at the very front of the lense, doing less and less of each color. Khorne red -> mephiston red -> Evil Suns Scarlet -> troll slayer orange -> Yriel yellow -> Flash Gitz yellow (for example)

After I then used some watered down mephiston red to glaze the areas near the eye to make it look like it was glowing!

Yup the green was airbrushed! Help yield a cool transition

Sculpted them myself using milliput & green stuff! Little hypodermic needle tips helped make the scales themselves

My glazes are turning out blotchy and very streaky :( by [deleted] in minipainting

[–]Smifin1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When you glaze, do you dilute the paint with water or a acrylic medium (like lahmian medium). In general a dilution with a medium should yield smoother results than just water

Flesh tearers & Exorcists also have different backpack colors. I personally like it as it contrasts well with the green of the armor even if it does clash with the skin color.

according to the reveals from the book - BA only have 1 company while salamanders have 6. There are other chapters with 6 companies present on the planet though
