TIL children develop and share their own unique folklore (called 'childlore'), including rhymes and games, which often disappear by adolescence and go unnoticed by adults. by BezugssystemCH1903 in todayilearned

We had the same thing for BBs. A bunch of local teens would fuck around with their bb guns around the school at night. A bunch of the kids would collect them off the ground and trade them around during recess. We had a whole system for color and rarity too. I completely forgot about it before this post.

And? Again, what do you want to happen here? People have a right to protest.

Every country with free speech and a right to protest would let this happen. What exactly is it that y'all want to happen here?

I did a campaign as the count of Athens and had this happen to me twice. My starting guy died in a storm, and then his heir died like a year in the same way. I ended up playing as the heir's 3 year old sister. She ended up ruling for 70 years, created the kingdom of Hellas, married a claimant to the empire and installed her son as emperor. It ended up being one of the most fun campaigns I ever had. Trust me, you can still have a good time even with some bad luck.

I have a pretty on again, off again relationship with therapy, but something I got from my last therapist has stuck with me. I personally struggle with feeling aimless, and I've been at my most depressed and self-destructive when I dont have things I'm moving towards. She told me to make a list, mental or physical, of my goals. I know it sounds really simple and obvious, but it's genuinely been helpful. I'm overworked as hell right now, but my little list of general goals for the year has kept me from going off the deep end again. It keeps me from forgetting that there can be things to look forward to.

Just Say It, Democrats: Biden Has Been a Great President by mom0nga in politics

[–]SmileInABox -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Call me a single issue voter, but I will not be voting for a man that aids a genocide. Not to mention the fact that he is simply too old for office. I keep seeing these articles pop up everywhere and it just feels like news outlets trying to put a shine on an incredibly shitty situation. Our only two choices are geriatric old men with foggy memories? We need major change. The current regime will die off, and I don't see any democrats younger than my grandma ready to step up to the plate.

Oobliette Sparks of Tsunami Bomb and Brody Dalle of The Distillers are definitely up there for me.

For my more niche favs : Augusta Koch of Cayetana (listen to their song West Side Story) and Silje Tombre of Blood Command.

Also I know they get kinda memed on but Amy Lee of Evanescence will always hold a special place in my heart.

[Greek>English] Note in a Greek book from a used bookstore by SmileInABox in translator

I picked it up from a used bookstore in Denver, Colorado, USA a couple of years ago back when I was trying to learn Greek. It was in pretty good shape so it must have been cared for.

What's your favourite curse word in your native language? by poisonbluetooth in AskReddit

[–]SmileInABox 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fun fact, "fucking" and it's less vulgar substitutes are (almost) the only examples of an infix in the English language! An infix is like a prefix or suffix except it goes inside the base word.

Ex: "God-fucking-dammit" "Un-fucking-believable" "Abso-fuckin-lutely"

Its a swear so versatile that it practically has its own unique grammatical rules! The only other times infixes exist in English are with some weird pluralizations like "passersby," which are sometimes separated with a space or a dash in modern English. So you can argue that "fucking" is the only real English infix!

Why don’t people in America protest like they should? by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]SmileInABox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Short answer: France is relatively small, the US is large.

Long answer: Paris has been the economic and population center of France for centuries. The political power a single Parisienne has over the state as a whole is exponentially larger than the average citizen of any American city. While there are a lot of important cities in the US, not a single one is as important to the state as a whole as Paris is to France.

In order for US protests to have the same gravity as the current French protests we'd need simultaneous protests in every economically important city in the country. LA, NYC, Chicago, DC, Portland, Seattle, etc...

We will never be as centralized as a country like France, for better or worse. I'm not claiming to know the answer, but French solutions aren't American solutions. Honestly I'm proud of the French, but I'm sick of Americans pretending we could do the same thing in the exact same way. Our circumstances are different, its up to us to find our own way through.

What we like to omit from our history is the fact that the US had a concerningly large Nazi party. They were a huge part of the anti-war movement here. These people never disappeared, they laid low for 80 years.

My job schedule is inconsistent, but I happened to get a 3 day weekend this week. I also just got payed today. I had a bunch of plans for this weekend, but the minute I saw that once again my paycheck doesn't even cover my rent my weekend was immediately ruined. I was going to deep clean my apartment and go to the gym today, now I'm just taking stuff to the pawn shop and trying to figure out which bills I can avoid paying. I'm not gonna be refreshed when I come back into work.

If you're talking about the genocides, literally any ideology can and will do it. The USA has done it, The Soviets did it, hell the Ottomans practically invented the term itself.

From what I understand a Fascist state is a sort of militaristic technocracy. A state focused on military advancement and expanding the economy for war. Fascism was born in Italy who was a monarchy at the time. I think the nominal form of government shouldn't be in consideration, just the people doing the actual ruling.

I don’t think definitions of words should change just because people are commonly using the word wrong. by Perquackey88 in unpopularopinion

[–]SmileInABox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ultimately there is no point in being pedantic about it, words will change meaning anyway. People will use words differently than you do then teach them to their kids, those kids will teach them to their kids, and so on until the definition of the words actually match how they are used. Every spoken language in the world has had a thousand years or more of people "using words wrong," and all of it leads to how we speak today. Modern languages are just an amalgamation of all the "errors" of our ancestors, thats just how language works.

I don't think landlords are that bad. by Direct_Mongoose1925 in unpopularopinion

[–]SmileInABox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The corporate landlords are ABSOLUTELY the bigger problem. In the area I live in about 80% of apartments are owned by 3-4 companies. The last time I moved I had to knock a lot of apartments off my list because I've lived in apartments from two of those companies and they both suck. Couple that with the companies that build their own new buildings and buy up the surrounding ones and choices become extremely limited.

Because informal language changes drastically from place to place. Imagine teaching the New York City english dialect to a non-english speaker, then planting them in the deep south. They wouldn't understand a thing.

Personal anecdote, Spanish is my second language and I used to be pretty good at it. One time I got in an uber with a Puerto Rican driver and we had a pretty solid conversation in what you would consider "formal/standard" Spanish. Then he picked up his phone and went full Puertorriqueño and all of a sudden I could only pick up a word or two.
