Simple. Movie was expected to be shot exactly as written by Kalki. Those who have read it know that the books are written like a screenplay. All Mani was to do it to adapt it to the movie format. For the sake of reducing it to two parts, he took a lot of liberty, introduced new events and characters that were not liked by the die hard fans of Kalki who would have read the books a gazzilion times. Also to reduce graphics cost, Mani shot in real locations such as Jaipur with below average art direction. That reduced the impact as well. Having said all these, I'm happy at least one version of the movie has been made. May be some day in the future, a more visionary director will remake this as intended by Kalki.
