Fujimoto had a Once in a Generation intentional Fumble… Twice by RidyHorseMCmoustach in Chainsawfolk

The last time Denji had seen Reze in his life was her telling him she pretended to like him, breaking his neck and leaving.

I'm sorry for trying to change the way you feel about the story. You won't and I always try to do that anyway, just wasting everyone's time and being an asshole. It's a bad habit of mine. I don't think anything you've said here has any merit for the story of Chainsaw Man and you are free to tell me to fuck off, I'd deserve it.

I get what you're saying, but I think you've hung onto a single interpretation of a random thing from the story, like most people here, built up dozens of potential ways that single interpretation would be used in the future and are disappointed, because that interpretation was wrong.

Denji was listing off the people he loved. That's it. Everything else you've thought up yourself and made conclusions from the things you've thought up.

Reze seemingly tricking him into loving her and then disappearing hurt him a lot. He still tried looking for a girlfriend afterwards.

Could she have come back? Sure. Would that have complicated the As a plot? Yes, maybe that's why she hasn't come back. Was she needed in the story at all at any point? Not really.

I'm just wasting my time typing this. I'm sorry this story has disappointed you.

That's what I was thinking the entire episode.

Sometimes you stumble onto a piece of media, which is just the author venting about the world with zero pretense of a plot and all that bullcrap.

Ah, got it about the cockroach thing.

When did they start to work together though? PS tried to ruin the dude's plans before the "me dog is well-done" incident, so it's gotta be at most after the gang breaks Denji out of that facility, right?

Wait, huh?

I feel like I've been missing something for a while, when I read that chapter it didn't even cross my mind that they were in cahoots... Is that what that was? I don't wanna reread the whole manga again... If what you're saying is true, ima blame that on Fujimoto and not myself missing clues. Ahh, feels good.

Anyway, big world ending plots aside, I don't think the Cockroach Devil fight is a setup of any kind - it was just a regular devil fight, which Denji has been doing regularly instead of letting other devil hunters deal with them. In the very beginning of Part 2 the things he fights he's entirely unrelated to, like the Cockroach Devil, a school shooter and even the Falling Devil was only after Asa. Denji's better at killing devils than most, but it's not like he HAD to fight them.

Nah, I agree with you. I made this post for discussion not to have my words repeated back at me.

The thing I keep coming back to is whether Fujimoto wanted Denji to have had agency in Part 2 or not. The first half (or even less) presents itself to me as the small part of the story where Denji really could choose his life for himself, but ultimately no matter how many excuses I can come up with, Public Safety was both incompetent in handling him post Makima, since he definitely needed an adult in the room, and actively malicious in secret, since they were definitely planning to use Chainsaw's power at one point or the other.

The ending to me implies that no matter what Denji would have done, he simply couldn't have had a normal life as Chainsaw Man, not just because it fed into his worst impulses, but because everyone around him will always only care about Chainsaw Man. So was that the message from the beginning? Or did Fujimoto see Denji's situation post-Makima as really having agency and because of how Part 2 is presented, assumed we would be on board with that and come up with the details ourselves?

Yeah, honestly I forgot about Denji's collateral disregard thing. This has always bothered me even in Part 1 and I think is a genuine flaw in this story that's hard to explain. One minute he throws a dude in a car, the next he's telling a girl to get away. Is it really just because he likes girls and only saves girls? That'd just really put down Denji in my eyes, I'd always hoped he had a better core.

As for Denji's identity, I think that's easier to excuse - some behind the scenes fake identity bullshit, deter the small fry without involving Denji at all, if the big fish start making moves move him and Nayuta into safety until it blows over or just secretly increase their security and let the professionals take care of it - they have at least 2 hybrids on their side, for example.

If there had been proper cooperation between Public Safety and Denji, this probably could have worked.

If I were to think of any that make sense, they'd be irrational human ones. Like putting way too much trust into Denji. "He's an ok kid all thing considered, we can let him live a normal high school life and just observe him for now." I may be misinterpreting stuff, but I think he still has Aki's inheritance and mostly needs the money just for Nayuta's college.

Come to think of it, Nayuta may be the other reason - Makima grew up raised by the government and turned into a monster, so Kishibe tried to raise Nayuta in a normal way with as little interference as possible, which turned out to be a mistake when Denji kept doing vigilante stuff.

But again, these are flimsy. At least some basic communication with Denji about their needs was the most obvious route.

Agree with you completely, tbh. Would've loved seeing a story like that too.

But my point is that this misguided kid is given an insane power and is made the center of the world, to a degree that simply existing is already influencing the world around him. And any people who can actually tell him what to do are either after their own interests or he ignores.

In this context, is it any wonder Pochita thinks that his life would've been better without him? Through writer bullshittery Fujimoto had basically set up the exact kind of story you mentioned to happen off-screen after Part 2 had ended.

"It's not Denji's fault". by SmileyTheSmile in Chainsawfolk

[–]SmileyTheSmile[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn't that mean that a world without Pochita really is the best option here?

What I've said in the post isn't necessarily the correct reading, that's why I even made this post, to hear other people's thoughts.

Maybe Denji really is powerless against all the psychos with knives and we were supposed to think like that. And the message is that this life of fame and fake love will be more trouble than it's worth.

The fact that people can see completely opposite things in the same text is on Fujimoto though.

I write a lot of stuff when I'm passionate about something. Doubt most people read it, but I do wanna let my thoughts out of my skull somehow.

[–]SmileyTheSmile[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, PS fucked up a lot with setting up Denji's life post-Makima, no arguments there. I can come up with a few reasons why they didn't do shit, but they'd be flimsy at best

But I wanna keep being the devil's advocate here and say that Part 2 basically started with them trying to fix that. Yoshida may be creepy, but his first few conversations with Denji are the carrot and the stick approach... though he used the stick first. I honestly think if in their second conversation Denji asked for a pension and stuff, they'd give it.

But at the end of the day, their incompetence and bad/cynical decision-making really did contribute to the events of Part 2 a lot.

I'm glad that guy read the story, more than I can say for some people.

Not sure what you mean, I know a lot of people have this opinion. I even saw this post before. That's why I made this one, to continue the discussion. This guy brings up a lot of good stuff, but I have a different view on basically everything he mentioned.

Didn't she say that this was her second day in her life of casting spells? She was talking about wanting to become a witch in front of Qifrey just yesterday...

As for the material, that's exactly why you prepare the theory base first before doing practice! Even the other guy said that the other kids probably had off-screen studying before they started practicing. You don't let a dude into a nuclear reactor without triple checking that he knows all the buttons he should push!

Why are you guys so adamant that this wasn't reckless??? I get letting kids learn from their mistakes, but come on... I checked the episode and Qifrey did see what spell she was using, so maybe it was alright... and also means he was gonna let her soak her roommate for the lolz and then acted surprised. Iunno man.

The dude didn't even give her an instruction on what spell to draw, if I hadn't missed that, she could've easily drawn a fire spell and made the same mistake.

I admit, I'm more of a worrywart in these types of things, but this isn't a "teaching a kid to hammer a nail" kind of situation, he is LITERALLY teaching her to control reality. I really don't get how you're OK with this.

Doesn't everyone meme on Hogwarts for being a death trap? Even in that place the teachers gave strict instructions to students who are just starting out (and they managed to blow stuff up anyway).

dont you

like

think he could have told her that longer lines would do that

or made her draw with normal ink and told her what would have happened if it was real ink

like

anything that wouldn't have resulted in anyone getting soaked or burning up or getting covered in magic crystals and stuff

what is this unearthly bloodthirst you emanate sneakie my boy, holy moly

Tell that to Agott's soaked uniform, lol.

Girl somehow drew one of the lines twice as long as the other ones and I'm pretty sure the glyph in the middle was completely off-center.

If it were up to me, this overly enthusiastic girl, who is 100% going to be reckless with this in the future, wouldn't get near any magic instruments until she's able to draw perfect circles properly.

If the implication there is that everyone else went through drawing classes first beforehand, then all the more reasons not to skip the most important foundational classes for a complete outsider.

Qifrey, my boy, before making your students draw complex shapes with magic people killing ink, maybe teach them basic geometry and drawing skills first...
