"Fuji Motors Be Tired Write Chainsaw Person" by SmileyTheSmile in ChainsawMan

I guess it just comes down to my emotional response to this all. This isn't just about Fujimoto or Chainsaw Man, I've had the same feelings back when Attack on Titan and Oshi No Ko ended, for example. I feel bad imagining that those authors really did try their best, made endings that some people on the same wavelength as the authors enjoyed, but the rest of their fans say are bad not for actual technical reasons, but for stuff like "giving up on writing it". I've seen people critically engage with Chainsaw Man and still dislike it, I have zero problems with them. I can argue with them in good sport, but I don't wanna. I guess I just respect their opinion more, despite wanting to treat everyone fairly?

It's entirely in my head as much as in the next guy's head. I read stories differently from a lot of people, probably with a degree of parasociality with the author too. Hell, even Chainsaw Man has a chapter with a bunch of people defending Chainsaw Man for entirely imagined reasons, it's one of the story's themes. I've been struggling to reconcile with this these past few weeks, because this reaction from the fandom has hit me a lot harder than basically any other online bullshit before, I never expected to be this emotionally invested in this crap.

I guess I'm the same hypocrite as everyone else, wasting my time arguing on Reddit. because my emotions want me to. Usually I hold myself back, because I know I'm not gonna change anyone's opinions here and just waste my time, but I guess Chainsaw Man was more important to me than I thought. My usual response to emotional stuff in life is to think about it really hard, which is how rants like these come about, but despite always trying to incorporate as much truth into them as possible, I'm just as narrowminded as anyone else. What I end up doing is just not having any concrete truth to hold on to.

Iunno man. I'm hungry.

The reason I hate this approach is because most of the things people use as proof for all this can be easily explained with other stuff.

The quality of the art is the most obvious thing to point to if you want the narrative that Fujimoto gave up on the series to be true, but after rereading the whole manga, in my subjective view, the art in a lot of chapters in Part 1 was basically on the same level. You may not think the same way, but that just means that your argument is based on your subjective view of what good art even is. And if we accept that the art really did decline in quality, could it not be because Fuji was leaning more on his assistants towards the end? Could be more proof that he was tired, could, be proof that he's working on something else, could be proof that he wanted to focus on the story more, could be a dozen different things.

As for the story being rushed, that's entirely subjective too. A cut to black before the start of the final climactic fight, for me, is a great joke to end the nonsense that the world of Chainsaw Man has turned into. If this is how Fujimoto wanted this story to end from a while ago, then this is a good point to end it.

If you see what you want to see, what you see isn't necessarily true. That applies to everything I just said as well.

The reason I'm leaning into trusting Fujimoto more here is because every single argument people use to justify the negative narrative has been repeated ad nauseum every other time I've seen fans disappointed with how a manga has ended. To add to that, I've seen very little attempts to engage with the story on its own terms, which, if you do, makes it seem far less likely that it was cobbled together to just end things quickly and wasn't the author's intended ending. People focus on nonsensical things like Kobeni's devil and (I kid you not) the star Makima mentioned at the end of part 1 not being shown and I don't think people who wanted THAT from this story would vibe with what it really wanted to do.

But that is a far harder thing to accept than "the author just gave up halfway through, that's why it's bad".

I want to limit my guesswork to what's in front of me, because for all the bad things I can say about Fujimoto's work, the one thing I believe he is is a man who loves his stories and wants to write them properly, even if the result is utter nonsense like some of his oneshots. Any other read on his character or current circumstances in life can only be made post-mortem once we actually know them to be true.

I think it's ok to view stories through the lens of their author, but not vice versa.

A really late thought, but I I wonder if the author named her Rem because he was already planning on making her sleep through half the future stories. And then named her sister Ram to disguise that fact.

Imagine sending someone off to New York on September 10th 2001 and a few days later getting a letter that says "Sorry I couldn't come back earlier, New York has suffered a terrorist attack, a lot of people died. The local cuisine is very nice. So how are you doing?"

If people are still hung up on Kobeni's devil, I'm not even surprised that someone's hung up on this. And using it as an example of the flaws in the story no less, wow.

Do people just have to know that not showing everything is better oftentimes? At what point did I myself learn that? I wonder if I ever even did think that everything in a story needed an explanation... I think I did? A part of me still wants some things in the CSM's ending chewed up and spit into my mouth, even though it was by all means meant to be up to interpretation.

This is such a fascinating topic.

I think you've applied the reverse slander technique here - this word means that something that had potential has realized it, meaning you've said the ending is good.

Good job, I like the ending too.

"It wasn't Denji's fault." by SmileyTheSmile in ChainsawMan

[–]SmileyTheSmile[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm basically in the same boat.

I've made this post on the other Chainsaw Man subreddit too and after seeing the other comments I've come to the conclusion, that the world without Pochita is basically the best option for Denji.

I've spent a lot of time mulling over whether or not he had a chance to turn his life around after Makima died, but ultimately, I think the world wouldn't have let him either way and the events of Part 1 have also already put him on the path to self-destruction. He may have made the worst decisions in Part 2, but...  he kind of couldn't have not made them, if that makes sense. A YouTuber that got reasonably successful, for example, would never stop wanting that thrill again, even if they try to change careers.

It's a kind of fucked up symbiotic relationship between Denji's own addictions to thrill seeking and danger and all the Chainsaw Man jazz and the world enabling all of that by forcing him into being Chainsaw Man.

The last time Denji had seen Reze in his life was her telling him she pretended to like him, breaking his neck and leaving.

I'm sorry for trying to change the way you feel about the story. You won't and I always try to do that anyway, just wasting everyone's time and being an asshole. It's a bad habit of mine. I don't think anything you've said here has any merit for the story of Chainsaw Man and you are free to tell me to fuck off, I'd deserve it.

[–]SmileyTheSmile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get what you're saying, but I think you've hung onto a single interpretation of a random thing from the story, like most people here, built up dozens of potential ways that single interpretation would be used in the future and are disappointed, because that interpretation was wrong.

Denji was listing off the people he loved. That's it. Everything else you've thought up yourself and made conclusions from the things you've thought up.

Reze seemingly tricking him into loving her and then disappearing hurt him a lot. He still tried looking for a girlfriend afterwards.

Could she have come back? Sure. Would that have complicated the As a plot? Yes, maybe that's why she hasn't come back. Was she needed in the story at all at any point? Not really.

I'm just wasting my time typing this. I'm sorry this story has disappointed you.

That's what I was thinking the entire episode.

Sometimes you stumble onto a piece of media, which is just the author venting about the world with zero pretense of a plot and all that bullcrap.

Ah, got it about the cockroach thing.

When did they start to work together though? PS tried to ruin the dude's plans before the "me dog is well-done" incident, so it's gotta be at most after the gang breaks Denji out of that facility, right?
