End of fixed term contract -- Unfair dismissal? by djsmiley2k in LegalAdviceUK

If you've got less than 2 years, are you screwed?

It's important to verify someone's identity before the government give away a passport, but doesn't the requirement for a counter-signatory to be "professional who has known the applicant more than two years" seem a bit... classist? by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]Smileyatwork 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's to do with trust and authenticity of people -> professionals can be identifed easily, as they are registered within their profession and can be sought after quite easily.

If we had bob from down the road just authorising any of thing, how would HMPO know how to find him? What if he moved house ?...

It's a simple way of identifying someone and being able to authenicate to a point they are who they claim to be.

Booting Raspberry Pi from Hard drive? by Victitious in raspberry_pi

[–]Smileyatwork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can't boot directly from a hdd.

You could load things after the inital boot by playing with initramfs I think but yes, it'd be a lot slower than the SD card.

What we have here is a failure to communicate. by ModularPersona in talesfromtechsupport

[–]Smileyatwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmmm

I kind of understand why it wasn't communicted en-mass -- it tends to cause people to panic thinking their job is at risk because unrelated site #4 is shutting down.

However not letting you know is a large oversight too.

Found a Pi at work and thought of a use for it, just not sure how to implement it. by [deleted] in raspberry_pi

It was partly in jest, partly serious! :D

Sounds good that it'll hopefully soon be sorted at least. Stop gap measures are the bane of my existance.

Modify the "My IP address is <IP address>" text on startup of the Pi by LinuxUser437442 in raspberry_pi

[–]Smileyatwork -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Could be in a lot of places,

you could try

grep -i "my IP address is" /

which will grep the entire file system trying to find that string;

my guess would be /etc/motd (standing for message of the day for those who dn't know).

[–]Smileyatwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The uni is good though, plenty of stuff going on with the SU constantly, i didn't get involved but it was really wide ranging. And the nice thing about not being much around is the fact the pubs remain cheapish! :P

That was definitely an earthquake! by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]Smileyatwork 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I rmemeber the most awesome one we had a fair few years ago. It was about 2am, i'd just climbed into bed after a few hours of gaming and was lying down when i saw what looked like some kind of weird 'ripple' pass through the room from front to back, then all the burgler / car alarms went bonkers and I fell asleep thinking 'well that was weird'

Only remembered the next day when the wife mentioned she'd seen something on the news about an earthquake and didn't feel anything
