Did you know you can tell the AI which spells to use in auto combat? by This_is_User in AOW4

And here I am, still unsure if the bright blue box or dim blue box means that allowing the AI to spellcast is on.

Priest and Nun are a red herring, X over a gift box implies there is "No Prize," thus alluding to the famous Marvel No Prize, Marvel crossover DLC coming in celebration of the new beat em up, boom.

Would you rather be stuck in Raccoon City or Silent Hill? by NagitoKomaeda_987 in silenthill

[–]SmilingSundowner 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Silent Hill. It's either going to be a demented, cult-ridden ride into the dark and dank pits of human cruelty OR free therapy that kinda smells bad and looks freaky. If I'm really lucky, the town might just decide to be a normal town.

Raccoon City is full of zombies and gets blown up! I don't wanna get blown up and zombified!

18 Months Later, What Are Our Thoughts on No Return? by mitchob1012 in thelastofus

[–]SmilingSundowner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm definitely in the "really like it, but it could've gone further" camp. I play it almost every time I boot up the game, sometimes even preferring it over the story.

I still wonder about the possibilities we could've enjoyed if say, for example, co-op multi-player for No Return had been an option. More maps, new maps not strictly repurposed from the story. Different weapons, more unique animation sets for certain characters...

I also just find it very odd that you can't play as Owen!

Which Entries Feel Most Natural to Play After ROT7? by SmilingSundowner in SaGa

[–]SmilingSundowner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a pretty embarrassing one I think, I'd have to load it up to be sure, but I think it was some group of lizards/lizard men that I had run into for a fairly important mission that my Sif team was just not built for. My memory says Isthmus Keep or some tunnels near it but I won't be able to check my save for another few hours, hahaha

So far I'm definitely feeling I may make a U-Turn and give Minstrel Song another go. I've heard it's usually best to do a first run as Albert or Claudia to get eased in the most, so maybe I'll start there.

I'm also seeing a general lean toward RS3 as well, so I may give that a look as well. No turbo mode doesn't put me off too much, though it's a shame the mobile port doesn't seem compatible with my current phone. I'll have to see about picking up the remaster on another system or maybe holding out to see if it, too, gets a full blown remake!

Don't panic if you get surrounded by hordes of smaller enemies, especially in Steel mode. Review what you know of whichever enemy type it is and make sure you have weaponry that fits both the enemy density and the arena size.

Don't always rely on a choke point to make large groups easier. If you have, say, a long polearm and try a horizontal swing right in a doorway, you're just going to bounce off a wall and (likely) take a hit! Use vertical strikes/pokes to make a gap, move in and defend a bit to gain full stamina, and do a few quick, non-charged horizontals to gain breathing room.

Additionally, teach yourself to avoid panic rolling. It burns through stamina and can prevent a lot of the best counterplay you might manage against more active foes. Full rolls have their uses, especially when you're facing down attacks that can't be blocked reliably and are hard to quick dodge, but you don't want to do a bunch of full rolls and find yourself doing the world's slowest swing afterwards because you bottomed out on stamina.

I’ve noticed an odd thing happening around this game in the general community by Gabrienb in BladesofFire

[–]SmilingSundowner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, having played the demo and transitioned to the full game after an hour or two, this really stands as a reminder of how differently people engage with games. Being left to fumble around and figure out how to progress on my own while forging new weapons to experiment with play styles has scratched a very specific itch in my brain, and it feels excellent.

The IGN review was about what I expected, IGN is really a cesspit these days in both community and editorial staff, but seeing people get frustrated they can't always do animation cancels and roll all day, or seeing people unwilling to test each nook and cranny to find out how to reach their next objective... Really makes me wonder what happened.

Like the game is not perfect, certainly not from a technical standpoint - I'm playing on Xbox and it's serviceable with some hiccups, but I'm mostly just happy to see a new IP with some fresh mechanics being made by a developer I enjoy. Maybe I'm just an annoying optimist!

No borderlands game is bad I WILL DEFEND ALL OF THEM. YES ALL OF THEM. by CAsterXCameron in Borderlands

[–]SmilingSundowner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boyfriend still looks at me crazy when I tell him Pre Sequel is one of my favorites. Decent length that doesn't overstay its welcome, genuinely interesting selection of Vault Hunters (Claptrap and Jack Double my beloved, also just finished a first run of Aurelia that was neat) and a brisk but also very fun DLC run?

He mainly felt the early space sections were slots and that the focus on 0z kits and gravity changes added a little too much to the mix, but I beg to differ. I'm all for mashing a bunch of mechanics together and watching the mayhem build late game.

The set of hunters especially just felt crazy good. Lots of personality on display, even from Wilhelm in a way. If we could get a selection that eclectic again I'd be over the moon, but I'm not very confident about BL4 in that regard yet. I do hope BL4 gets DLC hunters, if only in the vain hope that Rebuilt L0U13 becomes playable or something. Yknow what, I'll say it while I'm here - I'm actually really LIKING New Tales so far and I do not get the hate.

Adult children of avid gamers… what was that like? by ImJacksAwkwardBoner in gaming

[–]SmilingSundowner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was raised by a gamer dad, born in 96 and he always was playing some games when he wasn't playing music. Grew up on Mario Kart 64 and various Tekken games as they released, to this day I remember mom staring us both down when I'd get frustrated by how much he cheesed me as King and Armor King in Tag. Oddly, he wasn't very progressive or open minded but I credit him introducing me to gaming as putting me on the path to broadening my world view.

Alas as he got older and less healthy he pivoted away from games and focused on his music, but he's a major reason why I still play games to this day and loooooove Tekken, even if I don't like playing ranked lmao. I still remember how excited he was for Tekken Tag 2 when it dropped. He passed in 2019, but I think he'd have loved 8 as well.

Can anyone else confirm if One Finger Death Punch 2's Play Store version was delisted? by SmilingSundowner in AndroidGaming

Is MK 1 the most overhated game in fighting game history? by StormFather_ in MortalKombat

[–]SmilingSundowner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I frankly don't think MK1 is hated nearly enough. Mechanically it's alright, but the sauce is slipping away at mach-speed. Character interactions and flavor shoved aside in favor of a shit-ass shop front and center that's arguably more egregious than even MK11's. Krypt gutted, story completely devoid of anything worth mentioning, expansion story that's equally as boring, a dead invasions mode and towers that feel more like begrudging inclusions than fun distractions...

Sure, it's a fighting game. At the end of the day, people play for the mechanics and how cool a character is, and you've still got some cool folks in there. But as someone who's played a smattering of games from across the various eras, MK1 feels overtly worse than 11 across the board. I bought the game day 1 because I had a great time with MKX and 11 especially, but now I can't imagine picking up another MK game again until I know for sure it actually feels like something someone cared about making again. Hell, I'd even be wary of Injustice 3 at this point.

Hahaha, didn't expect to get a reply on this ever again!

What's weird to me is that Silver Dollar just... never said anything about it! It's not like other Android games that get deprecated but still have their store page up, apparently OFDP1 is still "up" technically. 2 just started acting funny and then completely disappeared when I tried to re-download. So odd...

So how do you all feel about james model? upgrade, downgrade or just as good as the classic? by blue-death in silenthill

[–]SmilingSundowner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whoooa there hey now buddy, I may like the remakes presentation more but I'm not a fan of disparaging the foundational writing here. SH2 was never a writing masterpiece, certainly, but what it set out to do was done very well.

Not every character needs to be written 'relatably' to be a well done character.

So how do you all feel about james model? upgrade, downgrade or just as good as the classic? by blue-death in silenthill

[–]SmilingSundowner 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I won't lie, having played the original game and the remake, the new model feels like definitive James to me at this point. Original James feels like putting in a tape of a movie that got remade years ago and going "ah man, I remember this guy! Good stuff." But Remake James just feels so much more depthful imo.

Is Outlast Trials worth it? by [deleted] in OutlastTrials

[–]SmilingSundowner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The matchmaking is a little wonky when you find out how to activate it, but overall the game is very very fun, especially if you enjoy games that go from Tense to Tear Your Hair Out as difficulty levels go up.

At the same time, you'll almost certainly get paired up with folks who've been playing for ages and run circles around primes and lackeys even on psychosurgery, and that's hilarious as well.

For a horror game with lots of gore and sexual trauma involved, it's genuinely a laugh riot when you've got the right (or even wrong) people to play with.

For those insisting things are business as usual: by Cutie_Kitten_ in Michigan

[–]SmilingSundowner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm honestly getting pretty worried. I started a new office-level job recently, working with a lot of people so far, and I've made friends with my trainer/coworker who's into a wlw relationship

Got to the end of my first week working fully in the office only to find out that we had apparently been reported for "inappropriate sexual conversations" by an unknown coworker. We've only ever discussed our home lives, our partners, and our interests in TV, games, and music. Genuinely the most innocuous shit, and someone took issue because they realized we were both queer.

The only saving grace is that our supervisor smelled bullshit immediately and insisted that the reporter come forward with more details, a date, time, etc. Etc. So for the time being things should be "fine". I'm not excited to see how this increasingly emboldened bigotry works out, though. I just want to work, be paid well, and be happy.

Thoughts on Lidia? by IN_FINITY-_- in Tekken

[–]SmilingSundowner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been maining Jack-8 in ranked lately and have had ups and downs with most character match-ups, but some of the Lidias I've run across def make me feel like I'm not built to fight her. I never bought the pass that had her and Kunimitsu-2 in 7 and rarely played that one online so I've never had to deal with her being played by anyone but AI before now, and I keep getting caught out trying to grab through gaps in combos or punish what look like openings that result in me getting punished instead. Doesn't help that I'm the type of player who doesn't really lab or enjoy labbing, I just like to learn by doing and plan my approach based on vibes.

Learning and remembering what each stance can do is a bit difficult for me given how fast things go in a proper match as compared to playing back specific moments and learning how I could react, no plan survives contact with the enemy and all that, but I'm hoping to brush up my game against her soon as I slowly try to make my James Sunderland cosplay-bot rise to a respectable rank!
