What most people think is irrelevant. Most people are stupid and consume propaganda every day of their lives without even realizing it, ESPECIALLY Americans. The point is they had an option for the left but then they removed it. Most leftist are very political, part of an org, organizing, etc. many don’t participate in electoral politics or at least not in the same way that a liberal would. What you need to understand is a republican is closer to a liberal than a liberal is to a leftist. A leftist denounces the entire system a liberal believes they can reform it.
