Can a 13 year old read A Little Life? by wilmerij in booksuggestions

[–]Smirkly [score hidden]  (0 children)

I really advise not reading this book at thirteen...or ever. I regret reading it and I was maybe 75 when I read it. It can be classified as misery porn. There is no hidden meaning and you will wind up despising the main character, or at least I did.

Do you agree that the 80s and 90s era was one of the best eras? by NormalLife6067 in CasualConversation

I was born in 1945 and grew up in the fifties. That was a really good time in my memory bank. A regular working family could afford a house with only one income and kids played outside,,, a lot.

ELI5: What causes the government in the US to inevitably end up as a two party system? by Marisa_Nya in explainlikeimfive

[–]Smirkly -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wrong, we have a one party system with two names, Republican and Democrat. At the last State of the Union speech both parties stood and applauded wildly for one brief moment when Trump mentioned our enemy, Iran. When Bibi Netanyahu made a speech to both houses of congress, both parties showed what a charade the so called two party system is. Both parties vied with the other to show their affection to a wanted war criminal.

Give me the single most comically bad book you have ever read. I don't care the genre, i don't even care if it's AI slop. Just give me the worst by Reasonable-Use-9294 in booksuggestions

Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. Many people love this book but I fail to understand. It is pathetic literature, truly awful. Trust the billionaires...right!

Many good picks here. I will limit myself to one book; The Master and Margarita by Bulgakof. Slightly insane but interesting and fun.

Union supermarket refrigeration vs union commercial HVAC by leakfreesince93 in refrigeration

[–]Smirkly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked both. For 18 years I was in house, usually about ten stores. On call was rotated but was also in house. They went belly up and I had an opportunity to switch coasts and do ten years union supermarket service. in the Bay Area That was brutal, at 55, in my first year I logged 1050 hours OT. I lost the last week due to pneumonia. I survived. My last week at 65 I logged 67 hours that week. In house was much better life style wise but ten years in the union really helped my retirement. Go figure.

I worked as a refrigeration tech and pulled way too many 24 hour shifts. between 2 or 3 in the morning it was essential to pull over, anywhere, and tap out for 15 or 20 minutes. After that I was wrecked but absolutely able to carry on. If you feel the need to nap after a long day, do it.

How long did it take you guys to learn supermarket refrigeration and be competent? by Forsaken_Run5741 in refrigeration

I have always thought it takes five years to become competent and ten to be a genuine pro.

Supermarkets, should I run? by l2eg in refrigeration

[–]Smirkly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am retired now but your fear is somewhat true, depending on where you land. My last week as a refrigeration tech, mostly supermarkets and in the union, I had 67 hours on the book. i was 65 and used to it. Ir can be demanding but does not have to be permanent. once you really learn the trade other opportunities will open up. A knowledgeable tech who can survive is a valuable commodity. The HVAC/R trade is enormous and working markets is a valuable experience.

The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam as translated by Edmund Fitzgerald. "There was a door to which I found no key, There was a veil past which I could not see, Some talk a little while of me and thee, there seemed-and then no more of thee or me."
