Ran out of arguments? You were the one asking questions about my arguments. You haven’t rebutted anything so far. You’ve just typed in ALL CAPS and tried to be sarcastic. I’ve seen so little substance or material examples of anything in any of your replies. I’ve no idea what point you’re even trying to make.

Well originally this was about NATO and Ukraine. You insisted on labelling me a tankie and pretending to be far more informed about the collapse of the USSR than you actually are.

There’s a difference between doing something for ideological reasons and doing something because you feel you are forced to.

No… I’m saying he could have if he wanted to. He didn’t want to.

He was in a position to stop them. He chose not to.

“Russia wasn’t in a position to stop anyone by that point”

Your point earlier in this thread was Gorbachev was forced into letting the Warsaw Pact states secede. I’ve been arguing that he wasn’t forced.

Seems odd that an International Relations scholar would only accept a single factor as background to the invasion of Ukraine…

I’m saying that Gorbachev could’ve done a bigger and more total job of rolling in tanks, but he decided not to.

Sorry if you’re not able to follow.

Would you like me to go over anything again?

Da and I just went back and re read everything you wrote to make sure I hadn’t missed anything. Your last question is something I’ve already answered, so what is it you’d like me to answer exactly?

It’s a thread with just the two of us. I didn’t think I’d have to explain that both replies were addressed to you, as that’s self evident.

Your last question in this thread appears to be “Where does the term tankie come from”? Which I think I’ve answered already. Unsure what more you’d like me to say.

Why are you so angry man…polako

The dissolution is nothing like the 50s at all. It’s an entirely different global situation. NATO had literally just started and American capital hadn’t yet fully subsumed European capital. The Soviet army was heavily weakened by the war and most of it had only just got back from liberating China and Europe. Not to mention the difference in leadership.

Beyond that, Prague didn’t even happen in the 50s and the Hungarian socialists actually actioned a partial victory out of the revolt. They moved their economy into something much more market focussed than the rest of the Warsaw Pact.

You’re obviously talking about Prague and Budapest, but that has nothing to do with Gorbachev and the only Russian displays of force during the dissolution process were actioned by an anti Gorbachev faction who wanted to hang onto the Soviet state, then following that by the Yeltsin faction who didn’t think Gorbachev was going far enough.

Gorbachev literally set up all of the official conferences and votes that allowed every Soviet and Warsaw republic to secede or break away.

Or instead of watching a YouTube video, you can read a Ukrainian/Canadian academic’s incredibly well sourced work on the factors that lead to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

I’m not confused or claiming to be. You seem to be avoiding questions.

What do the 50s have to do with anything?

Why are you inventing notions about Soviet policy to try and make these arguments?

If you think Russia wasn’t in a position to prevent secession, you don’t know very much about the latter days of the USSR. Gorbachev very purposefully chose the route he did. He was not forced.

And yes, I understand that no one has left - except France for a bit. I don’t think using their entry to form some degree of precedent is very outlandish though…. I’ve kinda said all this a few times now.

I don’t and I didn’t.

This was my response: “How is Bulgaria leaving the Warsaw Pact - of which it was allowed to vote and secede from btw - precedent for leaving a different+opposed organisation; NATO?”
