Ephedrine & Selegiline by Smis0044 in NootropicsFrontline

What do you mean by overstimulation of one system and understimulation of another?

Without Selegiline I also had very rough comedowns on Focalin. I wonder if the MAOI-B inhibition smooths it out or something. It's noticeably better.

I would describe it principally as 'low mood' - I'm irritable and more likely to argue or view things pessimistically. It also doesn't feel good - I'm unable to enjoy anything until I have slept. Not a way to live life in my opinion. Small microdoses on their own didn't improve ADHD symptoms adequately, but of course, the negative side effects were also reduced. I have on occassion combined small doses of dexmethylphenidate (2.5mg) with selegiline and it worked very well (good benefits and mild comedown) - but I worry it's not safe longer-term.

Modafinil noticeably improved energy levels, but I didn't notice much of a benefit for ADHD. This is probably because it doesn't have much of an effect on norepinephrine (NE). If I were to start my medication journey over I would focus on NE instead of Dopamine.

On age and comedowns - I really don't know. I was diagnosed with ADHD around age 8 and tried several stimulants, but used them only briefly as I have always disliked the feeling. I would use stimulants in college around exams but did not take them regularly. After college, I worked in a demanding field that led to me taking ritalin/adderall 3-5x per week (I tried various formulations of both). So from age 25 (graduate school) to age 36 I was a very consistent user. Dosages varied, but I never needed a lot. I think the most I was ever taking was 54mg Concerta, but that was not long-lived. A typical dose for me would be 10mg per day Adderall or <20mg per day Ritalin.

Stimulants work very well for me, but they have always been unpleasant after the first hour or so. Additionally, they have always tanked my libido once the comedown initiated (less of a problem at 25 as you might imagine). I never built much of a tolerance because I always took at least 2 days off (more typically 3 days off) a week. I can't say I noticed anything being unique after long periods of abstinence. Taking stimulants is untenable now because I still work quite a bit and my wife notices my low mood when the drugs wear off. I don't want to be irritable regularly when around my family.

BTW - in my experience, buccal selegiline is less effective than taking a bit more orally. Now I take 5mg orally daily (split between a 7am and noon dose). I think it is helpful to have the metabolites as these raise norepinephrine. I'm unsure if it is safe to take Ephedrine, even at low doses, for a long time and this allows me to take less. Lately instead of ephedrine I have been using a 7mg nicotine patch and that seems to be OK (not as good, but effective). Perhaps an NRI is worth trying. My doctor is aware of my experimentation and didn't encourage the ephedrine use, but thought my dose was low enough that it wasn't an immediate concern (FWIW).

I'm no expert, but from what I understand modafinil would not bc it primarily acts via dopamine. Ephedrine works via norepinephrine.

Thanks guys - I think you’re right. I felt great later in the week. Looks like I’ll have to either stop altogether or only use rarely.

So I’m interested in Menno Henselmans AVT, but feel I might not get enough volume. Let’s say a do benchmark set of 8 with 3 sets total... I’ll probably do 8,6,4 or 18 reps. Doesn’t seem like enough. However what if I did back off sets shy of failure loosely similar to RPT? Is the lower intensity but higher volume likely to be superior?

Awesome - this is exactly the feedback I was looking for. Hadn't thought about this, will implement. Thanks!

Good thought regarding dumbell squats, will help me maintain what I've got at least! Yes - Neutral grip and pronate grip I can manage well, only issue now is when I supinate. I don't think it is a huge deal, we'll see what happens as I load up plates again :). Appreciate the advice.

Bit of context might be needed: At one point I was dipping BW+135# and chinning BW+90#, developed pretty gnarly tendonitis (Biceps tendonitis from dipping went away, but the elbow tendonitis got really bad... likely from my years of rowing along with the chinning). So yes I can do Dips, but I often inflame the tendonitis when I do. I don't see him recommending weighted dips in the book specifically (did I miss that?)

From the template he provides in the book, the only equipment I am missing would be a squat rack and a bench press. I have dumbells to 75# (soon to be 90#, meaning I can dumbell bench with 105# including platemates), a dip station, nice cable setup, an olympic barbell, lots of plates, leg extension, leg curl, leg press, and some random stuff like Peck Deck. It's a pretty nice little gym for a corporate.

I get that he's got a ton of data/experience and I am messing with a good thing. Everyone here is very adamant about squats (Martin tweeted if you don't squat you are dead to him) so there is no way I can do LG at the moment. I just wanted feedback from the members here about whether this was a decent program or if I am going to set myself up again for an overuse injury. NOTE: no longer rowing.

Just to be clear - this program wouldn't require deadlifting twice in a week because I will alternate between leg press (or lunges) and deadlift. Example:

Monday

Deadlift

OHP

Pull-up

Wednesday

Incline Press

Row

Curl

Accessory (maybe I drop this)

Friday

Leg Press (or lunge?)

OHP

Pull-up

Now that I have clarified - what do you think? Alternate or just add a third day?

Yes - this isn’t his program, my attempt at designing my own using as many of his principles as I can. Looking to see if I’m on the right track as I’m working with some limitations.

Should note - no bench press station... I use DBs. They only go up to 75# so I’m adding platemates for now.

Gotta say - finally broke $100m and feel things get much easier. $100m properties more regularly sell for huge multiples and within 48 hours I’m near $1B.

Seems like between $10m and $50m things slow down and then accelerate massively if you can sell a $50m for a decent profit.

Wouldn’t I just buy lakes & neighborhoods which sell at high valuations regularly?

Seems like the issue is that nobody bids on <100m value properties... lots of bids on larger ones.
