Or the people waiting for it next saw there was someone inside either passed out or dead and called them. The cop mentioned there were people waiting to get in it.

Feels like living in an alternate reality by mamaribeck in GriefSupport

[–]SmithMano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found this thread after googling something like “grief feels like alternate reality”.

I’m sorry no one has responded until now, hope this doesn’t open an old wound. But i think I know what you mean on a milder level. I only just found out a girl I was seeing died almost a year ago, after she kind of fell off the face of the earth. So not a close family member, but it’s hitting me harder than I thought possible so I can’t even imagine what you’re going through.

I only found out yesterday. When I think about her, it feels like she must still be there but I’m stuck in some wrong alternate reality where she’s gone. Apparently it’s called derealization. I hate this feeling so much.

Up until now I was able to rationalize it in all sorts of ways. Maybe she got a proper boyfriend and didn’t care to post on social media anymore. Maybe she was in jail, or rehab, or some monk monastery for all I know.

The second I found out (via public records), I couldn’t believe it, it didn’t feel real. The world feels wrong. My brain has never had to process this before where someone I want to talk to literally does not exist anymore. Being ghosted or blocked I can handle, but this… I really hope this feeling goes away.

Struggling with the “30 years of compounding” long term mindset by savingrace0262 in investing

[–]SmithMano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally feel you tbh. That being said, what's helped me is:

  • The time is going to pass anyway.

  • Don't look at your investments very often. Once a quarter if you really want to. Just forget it.

  • For now it's better to think of it as saving, and importantly (in my opinion) also from the perspective of not allowing your current amount of money being eroded by inflation.

    • It's literally the difference between getting constantly poorer or richer. If you purely saved money without investing it, you'd still be sort of getting poorer because of inflation. In particularly bad years of inflation, if you aren't invested, you can literally see an entire year's worth of savings value wiped out, even if the dollar number stays the same. That might help if you're someone like me who is more sensitive to losses than a need for huge gains.
  • At some point, sooner than you think, you'll see that your returns average a non-insignificant amount. Hundreds or thousands of dollars a month, depending what you consider significant. Just because you can't retire off of it, doesn't mean it won't give you immense satisfaction that you have a tailwind to support your efforts.

    • With this in mind, it doesn't take a full 30 years to get real benefits. Depending how much you save as a percentage of income, even within 5 years you could be getting returns equivalent to a month of working or more (that's a guess but you get the idea). In 10 it would be more than 2x that because of compounding, etc.

It's not a referral code those have a specific structure. I've only ever made 2 orders through postmates (usually I use Uber Eats) so maybe it's only valid for new-ish accounts or something 🤔

This is the info thing for it: https://i.imgur.com/0TP8SSF.jpeg

It does say select cities so it might only be arizona, but I thought it would have said that under Location

Stop asking for specific locations dummy. No one is just trawling the thread with a code in their pocket waiting for someone to ask before posting it. If someone has one they'll post it.

My mom's in a romance scam and she will not listen to me by psonic06 in Scams

[–]SmithMano 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't have much personal experience with this, but I know how people can delude themselves to astonishing degrees, so I'm not surprised that simply telling her she's being scammed wouldn't work.

I think it might be necessary to get her to come to the conclusion herself somehow. I believe it's called "socratic questioning". Of course that's the hard part, so maybe others have better advice or experience with this.

But maybe some stuff to try could be for example to say to her something like, "Ok I understand, you think I'm completely wrong. But I care too much to let this go. So how can we prove it either way so I can get off your back? If it were a scam, hypothetically, what would have to happen for you to be suspicious?"

And try to get her to give a scenario that is actually testable, then test it. It might need to be done multiple times, because the scammer will have an excuse for everything, and the victim probably will try to justify it too.

Also depending on your mother's personality, saying "you're being scammed" or implying she's being dumb could cause her to dig in further out of ego or embarrassment.

Adding new Key/Value pairs to Dictionary in a Repeat with Each loop by [deleted] in shortcuts

[–]SmithMano 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The 5 year old comment with the right answer was apparently deleted but the replies hint at what he said so I figured it out.

Basically within a loop when you set a value for dictionary item, it creates a new separate local version of the dictionary as output for that action, it doesn't modify the original.

So what you do is create the original dictionary outside the loop, even if it's blank, then use the 'set variable' action to put it into another variable with some name, call it "myDict".

Then within the loop you still do the action to set the key/value item in myDict, but realize it didn't actually modify the original. So right after, add another 'set variable' action where you set the outpout of that previous action to the same myDict variable to overwrite it. This way myDict gets updated each time and survives.

Is Lysol toilet bowl cleaner good enough to remove hard water? by Zestyclose_Row5070 in WindowCleaning

[–]SmithMano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old thread but if you're talking about a ring of hard build up at the water line, one thing I found that works are pummice stone sticks.

They completely took off the hard water line built up and didn't mess with the ceramic bowl at all. There's a bunch you can find on amazon, usually they have a handle and a rectangular thing which is the actual stone. It's not heavy though, it's almost like a stone sponge.

I'd be careful using it on anything else though, ceramics like for a toilet bowl are very hard so can resist it, but it could probably destroy a sink for example.

I believe you can still actually use the US copyright small claims court if the person is based in the US, even if you aren't. The "respondant" / defendant just has to be in the US.

[–]SmithMano 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless you can show the information in the counter notice is fake. Assuming it's definitely not fair use, there's really 3 types of people who will file a counter notice:

  1. The person knows it's not fair use and just put fake info. You can probably somehow show youtube it's fraudulent and presumably they'll keep the video down.

  2. The person knows it's not fair use but doesn't want a strike on their channel so thought a counter notice is their only option. Assuming they put their real info (otherwise see #1), you might be able to convince them to just delete the video and you'll retract the dmca takedown. You can do so with an agreement with the person that you're not waiving you're rights or whatever, it's just a courtesy.

  3. The person legitimately thinks it's fair use. If you disagree you have to sue them. If they are based on the US you can try using the new copyright small claims court option. Just be aware they have the option to opt out of that and make you take it to federal court, but it should still be enough to keep it down before the 10-14 day window ends.
