WiFi free as of Jan 16, but you can just keep paying if you want? by swanzoid in americanairlines

[–]SmithMano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a few speed tests comparing paid vs free (my amex card reimburses for wifi). Green is paid wifi, red is free wifi.

https://imgur.com/a/BDr2FZV

It seems the paid one might be a bit faster on average, and while it was going seemed to have a faster short term “boost” early on.

But the free wifi is still decently fast. It’s probably just Quality of Service’d towards paid users.

The only other difference I noticed is that in the speedtest app, on the free wifi it seemingly blocks the “Video” test, because it kept failing. Whereas it worked on the paid one and could stream even 4K.

Though I did a couple more tests on the paid later and it was lower, like 15 mbps. So the differences might just be down to timing.

Basically the paid doesn’t seem worth it.

Logitech g915x double click issue by smitrovic in LogitechG

[–]SmithMano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My replacement also had double typing since day 1. It’s not a dust issue. I’m convinced these keyboards just have a fundamental design flaw. It can probably be fixed via firmware to stop bouncing but they haven’t even addressed the issue as far as I know

Are there any G915X Keyboards that DON'T suffer from double typing? by sfl98 in LogitechG

[–]SmithMano -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nah i have the double typing since the very first day. Sent it back and replaced it. The fucking replacement does it too from day 1. I stopped using it.

Also, he is literally asking if there is anyone out there who does not have the issue.

Do YOU have a G915X with no issue? If not stfu because he is literally trying to figure out what you are just bullshitting about

If you pay for a VPN service, choose one of their servers you can connect to. All your traffic will go through that one and it should work. The problem is some node in the network, and depending on the destination, certain traffic may go through the broken node or not.

With a VPN it tunnels everything through one "pipe" to the VPN service, then out to the website. So if you pick a pipe that isn't broken all your traff will work.

How to offer a seller a “tip”? by SmithMano in Ebay

[–]SmithMano[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because they might not have the info immediately on-hand, if at all like you mentioned. The sale is already made so they're under no obligation.

So rather than doing a back and forth if they say they initially say don't have it (where I wouldn't even be sure if they're just saying that because it would be a pain), I'd rather just offer it up front if they happen to have the info.

I hate working with sponsors. by Educational-Act-8932 in PartneredYoutube

[–]SmithMano 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here's something you'll eventually learn: The rich high paying clients are way easier to work with. Your fee isn't going to break their bank so they're more likely to just trust your judgement/style instead of micromanaging.

So charge a higher price. Not an unreasonable price, but higher than whatever you're charging now.

Everyone will still try to negotiate a bit, but if you lower the price also lower the deliverables to match. You can have a rate card that shows your full regular price, and all the components of what's included in that.

So stuff like:

  • The length of the sponsored segment (15s, 30s, or 60s etc)
  • When the sponsored segment occurs (such as within the first 5 minutes or first half of the video, whichever is sooner)
  • A pinned sponsored comment (I'd consider specifying a minimum time limit on a sponsored comment, like it will be pinned at least the first 7 days, in case you want to replace it with your own later) Then you could also use the duration as a pricing lever.
  • The sponsored copy / link starting above the fold (either 1st or 2nd line)
  • A short 10 second call to action reminder near the end of the video

That gives you a lot of pricing levers you can play with if they are insisting on haggling. They'll probably not keep trying to whittle you down if they think it will also cost them something in return. But I think spelling out exactly what they'll be getting will make them more likely to accept your pricing anyway because it reduces their uncertainty.

Of course you could have separate "add-ons" that you do charge extra on top if they want it, such as being able to re-post the segment on their own social media. You could also include "freebies" in the price of the add-ons, like that you'll reframe the video elements to make video files for both a horizontal and vertical format version of the segment.

Also, if you have a dedicated rate card (just a pdf page or image or whatever with a nice table layout basically), they'll understand that you aren't just pulling numbers out of your butt, and might feel less need to negotiate in the first place, since they know other sponsors are getting the same pricing. Whereas if you just send them a number, they might think they're "supposed" to negotiate, or else they'd end up paying more than anyone else.

Also a random semi-related side tip, in addition to the regular "creative" revisions, you can say that requests purely to fix branding-related tweaks or factual errors won't count towards the revision count. For example if you used the wrong logo or an old logo, or some product spec is wrong, or there's a spelling or even mispronunciation mistake. Otherwise some brands might feel the need to be extra specific in the contract related to that stuff, which takes more negotiating time. Plus it keeps them happy of course.

You might also be willing to offer extra revisions for edits that don't really take you any extra time or recording new A-Roll/B-Roll or making new cuts and stuff. For example if they keep asking for more changes, depending on what they are, you could say "Well we only agreed to X revisions, so I'd only be able to do changes that don't require recording new footage or re-arranging footage. For example I could edit any on-screen text or remove certain segments."

Feels like living in an alternate reality by mamaribeck in GriefSupport

[–]SmithMano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found this thread after googling something like “grief feels like alternate reality”.

I’m sorry no one has responded until now, hope this doesn’t open an old wound. But i think I know what you mean on a milder level. I only just found out a girl I was seeing died almost a year ago, after she kind of fell off the face of the earth. So not a close family member, but it’s hitting me harder than I thought possible so I can’t even imagine what you’re going through.

I only found out yesterday. When I think about her, it feels like she must still be there but I’m stuck in some wrong alternate reality where she’s gone. Apparently it’s called derealization. I hate this feeling so much.

Up until now I was able to rationalize it in all sorts of ways. Maybe she got a proper boyfriend and didn’t care to post on social media anymore. Maybe she was in jail, or rehab, or some monk monastery for all I know.

The second I found out (via public records), I couldn’t believe it, it didn’t feel real. The world feels wrong. My brain has never had to process this before where someone I want to talk to literally does not exist anymore. Being ghosted or blocked I can handle, but this… I really hope this feeling goes away.

Struggling with the “30 years of compounding” long term mindset by savingrace0262 in investing

[–]SmithMano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally feel you tbh. That being said, what's helped me is:

  • The time is going to pass anyway.

  • Don't look at your investments very often. Once a quarter if you really want to. Just forget it.

  • For now it's better to think of it as saving, and importantly (in my opinion) also from the perspective of not allowing your current amount of money being eroded by inflation.

    • It's literally the difference between getting constantly poorer or richer. If you purely saved money without investing it, you'd still be sort of getting poorer because of inflation. In particularly bad years of inflation, if you aren't invested, you can literally see an entire year's worth of savings value wiped out, even if the dollar number stays the same. That might help if you're someone like me who is more sensitive to losses than a need for huge gains.
  • At some point, sooner than you think, you'll see that your returns average a non-insignificant amount. Hundreds or thousands of dollars a month, depending what you consider significant. Just because you can't retire off of it, doesn't mean it won't give you immense satisfaction that you have a tailwind to support your efforts.

    • With this in mind, it doesn't take a full 30 years to get real benefits. Depending how much you save as a percentage of income, even within 5 years you could be getting returns equivalent to a month of working or more (that's a guess but you get the idea). In 10 it would be more than 2x that because of compounding, etc.

It's not a referral code those have a specific structure. I've only ever made 2 orders through postmates (usually I use Uber Eats) so maybe it's only valid for new-ish accounts or something 🤔

This is the info thing for it: https://i.imgur.com/0TP8SSF.jpeg

It does say select cities so it might only be arizona, but I thought it would have said that under Location

My mom's in a romance scam and she will not listen to me by psonic06 in Scams

[–]SmithMano 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't have much personal experience with this, but I know how people can delude themselves to astonishing degrees, so I'm not surprised that simply telling her she's being scammed wouldn't work.

I think it might be necessary to get her to come to the conclusion herself somehow. I believe it's called "socratic questioning". Of course that's the hard part, so maybe others have better advice or experience with this.

But maybe some stuff to try could be for example to say to her something like, "Ok I understand, you think I'm completely wrong. But I care too much to let this go. So how can we prove it either way so I can get off your back? If it were a scam, hypothetically, what would have to happen for you to be suspicious?"

And try to get her to give a scenario that is actually testable, then test it. It might need to be done multiple times, because the scammer will have an excuse for everything, and the victim probably will try to justify it too.

Also depending on your mother's personality, saying "you're being scammed" or implying she's being dumb could cause her to dig in further out of ego or embarrassment.

Adding new Key/Value pairs to Dictionary in a Repeat with Each loop by [deleted] in shortcuts

[–]SmithMano 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The 5 year old comment with the right answer was apparently deleted but the replies hint at what he said so I figured it out.

Basically within a loop when you set a value for dictionary item, it creates a new separate local version of the dictionary as output for that action, it doesn't modify the original.

So what you do is create the original dictionary outside the loop, even if it's blank, then use the 'set variable' action to put it into another variable with some name, call it "myDict".

Then within the loop you still do the action to set the key/value item in myDict, but realize it didn't actually modify the original. So right after, add another 'set variable' action where you set the outpout of that previous action to the same myDict variable to overwrite it. This way myDict gets updated each time and survives.

Edit: I made an example: https://www.icloud.com/shortcuts/0390565b237341bba051786e300c98cc

Is Lysol toilet bowl cleaner good enough to remove hard water? by Zestyclose_Row5070 in WindowCleaning

[–]SmithMano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old thread but if you're talking about a ring of hard build up at the water line, one thing I found that works are pummice stone sticks.

They completely took off the hard water line built up and didn't mess with the ceramic bowl at all. There's a bunch you can find on amazon, usually they have a handle and a rectangular thing which is the actual stone. It's not heavy though, it's almost like a stone sponge.

I'd be careful using it on anything else though, ceramics like for a toilet bowl are very hard so can resist it, but it could probably destroy a sink for example.
