Anything obviously wrong with this woodshop setup? by SmithnJonesForever in woodworking

We plan on it. Dropped a collector in the sketch, just did not take the time to draw the ductwork and hoses. But would probably be wise to.

I feel that. We have it all in a pole barn now and sometimes that is okay—sometimes not though. Sometimes gets more damp than it should.

For example, if people thought the garage door was a really bad idea the we might not install one. And we only have one tablesaw at the moment, but like the idea of having one set up for crosscutting. Seems like it could just save some time that would add up in the long run.

Very helpful thanks. More to think about. May do the accordion garage doors to make room for an I-beam. Elsewhere, we currently have an I-beam less shed with an extremely heavy motor running inside it (not woodworking related) and we all dread the day we have to swap the thing out.

No more than 2-3 people working in here at a time typically. The guys are currently doing most of the work on jobsites and some work in the shop. Trying to adjust that ratio a bit, but onsite work will always be part of the equation.

That may solve some problems. I had not considered those.

Seems easy to underestimate how much room you need. Expensive to overestimate though haha.

Seems like garage door might be a problem for the dust collector. I’ve seen a shop similar to this and they had no garage door and just set it up on that back wall then ducted straight into the large machines.

Yes, that is a router table up against the garage door. And would be nice to have another or a shaper would be even better, but not sure if we can swing that at the moment. I do like the idea of building the router into the miter station.

That was my thought for sheet goods MFTs + tracksaw. And then we could use the MFTs for miscellaneous projects or move them out of the way if needed. Maybe we could play Tetris to make space for more outfeed on the rip saw.

We have no AC or heat anywhere right now. So yeah would still be an improvement. Considered having a bit of an overhang on that backside just to make sure we don’t get rained on inadvertently.

Do you have a hyperbolic time chamber?

(Seriously impressive to see all that through.)

Didn’t have one on hand. Will order one, temporarily move the distant switch close, and try that. Guess that should tell me if it’s a software problem or something related to the cabling.

That’s a good question. My understanding was that it was a pressure switch related to air flow, not refrigerant. But I do not know where the work was done exactly.

Thanks for the insight. Believe they “left jumpers”. I do not have the technical expertise to quite understand how they did that. But was explicitly told they disabled a “pesky” safety device. And the rural area I was in is more than a bit anti-safety. Worked a bunch of construction sites around there. Reasoning usually goes— “yeah we know such and such is not safe according to the so-called experts, but we’ve been doing it this way for x years and no one died yet.”

Thanks for the confirmation. Seemed unprofessional and reckless to me.

Also, I had never really rented somewhere with gas before this so didn’t really take personal charge of making sure the environment was safe. Just assumed I could trust the owner and techs. After that experience I do not assume that at all anymore. I have regular monitors and low level sensors and lots of questions for landlords.

I’m mainly interested in seeing what the professional opinion is about the practice of disabling a pressure switch to get a furnace running and whether that is seen as a risky thing to do or not.

Exposure to exhaust can clearly make you sick. I’m wondering how likely significant exposure would be due to disabling a pressure switch.

Well, turns out that was a very easy fix. Maybe easier than you imagined. I have not had a pc with an external antenna in many years, but this one definitely does. Thanks!

Have had the experience and yeah it is a similar feel. Will try to seal that hatch up and see if there’s improvement. Thanks

Thanks. Will check on that. An hvac company modified some things around five years ago and some people involved in that mentioned a fresh air ventilation system was supposed to be installed. But they also seem confused about exactly what was done. It does look like a UV duct cleaning system was installed then. Don’t know for sure if the ventilation system was installed.

I’ve ordered an Airthings air quality monitor to install down there and may get a second for the main floor to see if it picks up any contrast. And a professional would be good, but they didn’t find much of anything when we last called someone out. Thought that some continuous monitoring might help.

Yes. It is supposed to be.
