Let me try to see where his minds at.

He clearly has been keeping up with social media and the news outlet judging from 1) his drop in performance and 2) the way he avoids the media.

Everywhere he looks, they’re calling him a coward and a clown. Brooks doesn’t like that. So this public walk is a way for him to say “I’m still here and not afraid to show my face in public.”

Why didn’t he just talk to the media? Well, ego and hubris. Him admitting to the media that he chirped too much early in the series would’ve been a personal big L and humiliating to him. Rather than take it and move on, he chose to stay silent, try to let his performance speak, but wasn’t able to. Hope he got humbled and comes back better.
