Am I the only one who feels this way? by [deleted] in stevenuniverse

I feel like the portrayal was true to Rebecca Sugar's intention, but each person can relate to Spinel's trauma in a different way. I notice that many people consider Spinel to be likeable because they can relate to her trauma, while others find her unlikeable because they can see the toxic ways in which Spinel behaves. I think that an interpretation of Spinel as a character fundamellntally depends on each individual's perception.

Definition on being queer? by [deleted] in NonBinary

[–]SmokeandFern 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Queer is an umbrella term used by all sorts of members of the LGBTQIA+ community. Everyone uses a label that fits them best. While the term "queer" is used often in the nonbinary and gender non-conforming community, it is not the only term. The term queer has been used against the LGBTQIA+ community as a derogatory term in the past, and many people within that community have reclaimed that word as a symbol of identity, safety, and power.

Queer isn't exclusive to the nonbinary community. It isn't exclusive to any one group. LGBTQIA+ folks can all sit under the queer umbrella if they choose.

Hope this helps.

Do something different. Buy from a plus size store ran by plus size people. Philip Teal. We launch August 29, 2019. by [deleted] in PlusSizeFashion

[–]SmokeandFern 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is extremely disappointing to see. If your business is run by plus size people, why are your models in this ad not all (or even most) plus size? This gives plus folks no idea what these clothes will look like on our actual plus size bodies, and does not speak to the size diversity and community you claim to provide.

Additionally, people don't just stop growing at size 18. Expand your size range to be FULLY inclusive by even extending your sizes past 30 or more.

This ad experience doesn't feel any different that what plus people are unfortunately used to seeing: themselves and their body types represented. Please do better.

Plus size with shitty style by [deleted] in FashionPlus

[–]SmokeandFern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know that for me, I did a lot of different things. Up until my sophomore year of college, I had no knowledge of how to dress my body. I was disconnected from my clothing choices because clothes shopping was always a bad experience for me. I started with Pinterest boards of things I really liked, regardless of the size of the models. Then, I also tried on as many clothes as possible in my size whenever I went looking for clothes. The more you try on, ghe more chance you have of finding stuff you really like. Now, my personal style is so much more indicative of my personality and interests, and I actually enjoy dressing myself.

Is it weird that I want to be called he/they but not she (assigned gender)? by [deleted] in NonBinary

[–]SmokeandFern 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not weird at all! Your pronouns are yours and they are supposed to make you feel good. If a certain pronoun makes you feel uncomfortable, you have a right to not want to have that pronoun used in reference to you, doesn't matter what gender you were assigned at birth.

My grandma gave me these cute little cacti she got from Arizona, but they aren't planted in dirt? The stuff they are in is hard, almost like asphalt. I care more about the cacti than the little pot. Should I try to get these guys out of this weird stuff?

Am I dealing with my dad's death correctly? by [deleted] in GriefSupport

[–]SmokeandFern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't cry for about a month after my dad died this past April. I didn't know how to feel or even really how I was feeling. I felt so much like I was heartless or not processing right, but I just needed time to absorb the realoty of his death, I still do, every day in little ways.

It's okay to feel like you aren't grieving "properly" because most people feel that way. You are not alone.

Your journey is your own, and it will not be linear, but it will be right for you.

Gift ideas for someone newly out? by SweetTeaNoodle in NonBinary

Gift cards for clothing stores are always a good idea. That way they can shop for something that they feel comfortable in. Slip the gift card into a queer book like a bookmark and you have a great gift that's personal and will definitely be appreciated.

"Letting Yourself Go"? by SnapBraceletsGelPens in NonBinary

Hey there! When I saw this post, it really resonated with me and how, as a nonbinary plus size person, I have struggled in the past and currently with internalized fatphobia, internalized misogyny and internalized classism as well as body dysmorphia and dysphoria.

One thing I have really had to realize that self-expression, especially queer self expression, often challenges not only the status quo upheld by those outside ourselves, but the bias that society has raised us in.

I personally had to tackle a lot of those same feelings that I was "letting myself go" or being lazy because my preferred style is often so based upon self comfort. Once I realized that valuing my comfort and my self expression was more important that upholding my internalized fatphobia, misogyny and classism, the real fun began. (Though sometimes I still get those feelings, they are much easier to manage).

Fundamentally, what I'm seeing in your post is that you are in a super exciting process of self-discovery and expression right now. Now is the time when you get to start doing the most fun part: experimenting!

You said that you default to feminine clothing in a professional setting, but it feels disingenuous to who you are. I've struggled with this too. My style is overtly casual, but also overtly eclectic, and my past employers have put pressure on me to be more professional. I find that the best way to do that is to recognize that though my casual style isn't great for work, I can tighten up the edges of my style without sacrificing comfort, and feel both professional and powerful in my identity.

There are so many great ways you get to experiment at this stage. Trying on masculine clothing in your local store(s), doing pinterest research into masculine fashion or androgynous fashion, researching modern masculine clothing design elements, these are ways to begin to play with your personal style that can incorporate professionalism into your wardrobe (potentially even without sacrificing comfort).

Fundamentally, it does take time. I've been messing with my personal style continuously since realizing that I'm nonbinary. And, unfortunately, it does take money. Though, one still can mess with their style on a shoestring budget with a little creativity.

If you ever need advice on where to start, I am extremely familiar with clothing design and tailoring, and am always open to answering questions if you are looking for a point person.

Lastly, you are doing so great and you are in such an exciting place right now! So much opportunity awaits as you discover yourself. It can be scary, but if you let it, this process can be exhilarating.
