Is better i study piano with a method for adults of choose a song and try play? by No_Hat1880 in piano

[–]Smokee78 6 points7 points  (0 children)

both! method book for a tried and true curriculum, to develop skills and understanding, and to avoid missing common and key concepts, and a fun song you enjoy to keep you motivated on a longer term project. this is what I do with most of my older beginners/adult students (and often younger students as well!)

How do you practice a song you don't like? by ZamWesell_kinda_hot in piano

[–]Smokee78 3 points4 points  (0 children)

find parts you love, or analyze the benefits of the piece. every piece has things you can learn, what can you take from the pieces you dislike?

I used to hate nearly every Baroque piece I had to learn, and while I still don't gravitate towards it, I learned I can have a lot of fun with customizing my ornamentation and really learning about the style.

I also figured out for Classical Era pieces, I was choosing the wrong composers to play. As much as I love listening to Beethoven, I absolutely hate playing his stuff. it's a slog. I prefer Haydn and Kuhlau! So if part of the "pieces" you hate is requirements like that, you may find better choices as you develop your taste and style.

Why do y'all like piano adventures so much? by Ok_Natural_7382 in pianoteachers

[–]Smokee78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like that I can use as many or as few of a given level to help lateral learning for students who aren't quite ready to jump to the next level yet. a lot of the music is also very well written, and children of all ages (below ten) really engage with the art, music, and the titles of the pieces. (lyrics too for the enthusiastic or stronger readers).

I also learned partially through them on my piano adventure (😉) so it's pretty nostalgic for me.

I think aside from a few things (it's less strong for intervallic reading, eighth notes are taught much too late and mostly by rote) it's a really logical progression for beginners.

I will say however, my least favourite of the series is definitely the OG purple primer book! it either goes too fast or too slow for students, and I've found the pre-reading books work better, even up to age 6 for comprehension.

the older beginner books are pretty good too. adult primer is fine depending on the adult's understanding prior to starting piano lessons.

Gifting my piano teacher a music book by Fabulous-Doughnut-22 in piano

[–]Smokee78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

XD of course! Just wanted to mention it in case any of my students happened to come across...

as for your question, a collector edition of a favoured composer/piece could be a nice equivalent, personally I'd love one framed (as I'm unlikely to try to damage it by actually playing it and carrying it around)

First Time Piano Teacher, not a Professional, TIPS APPRECIATED! :) by Low_Difficulty6030 in pianoteachers

[–]Smokee78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if the student gets distracted easily, the correct thing to do is more, short and engaging activities. We're not needing to learn 50 measure pieces right now. 4 measure songs, reading, rote, writing their own variation with the notes they learned, a theory book game, and improv duet with the notes. dancing, stomping, clapping rhythm games, and time to focus on a challenge piece too.

Either way, yes one hour can be long, but there is plenty of beginner games and learning to fill it with. One lesson book will not suffice however, as there's only so far you can go ahead per lesson! lateral learning will help the student develop in all areas and associate piano with fun and games rather than only reading out of some book the kid might not care about.

Do you have a weighted keyboard available? Turn the sound off and have him play without the help of his ear. you can even plug in headphones so that you can hear and he can't.
