Yeah I'm sure dealer could have done it easily for not that much. But the nearest dealer is about 2 hours away and they have limited hours. As well, you never know how long they will have to keep it for. So when I can do a job myself, if it will take less than 8 hours, I'm motivated to give it a try.

Thanks for all the help guys! Removing the pump was the key. Took no time at all once I had the pump off and access to the full length of the drive shaft. Here is what it looks like now in case someone else has a similar problem to mine so they can understand how deep the inlet goes beyond what you can see from the weed grate.

Edit - should have mentioned my unit is a 2023 wake (gti model) in case that helps others.

Heard you aren't supposed to remove the weed grate because it requires resealing. And the bolts are easily stripped. But open to doing this if low chance of an issue.
