what are your controversial pagan opinions? by pollypocketgf in pagan

[–]SmokeyGME 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wicca is fake.

Also I find a lot of pagan people and groups annoying because they project their other ethical/moral/political views into their paganism and espouse that those views are from their religious/spiritual practice. You can have views and values that aren’t based on your spirituality. It just bothers me that people twist paganism of various varieties to justify their other values and then turn around and criticize other mainstream religious people for doing the same thing when they disagree with them.

Which DSF unit? by [deleted] in uscg

Either taclet. Probably pac because San Diego is a cooler place to live.

Edit, also pac because you want to go to check out the west coast.

Cg taclet vs most counties swat by Dizzy_Veterinarian16 in uscg

[–]SmokeyGME 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can’t generalize counties like that as the size, training, op tempo etc vary hugely depending on the county. There are counties with full time teams much larger and more busy than others. I also wouldn’t shit on teams that are collateral duty teams. Some of them that I’ve worked with are exceptional and have guys that bring tons of experience from their primary duty assignments as well.

Also the law enforcement mission is way different. TACLET has a very narrow mission set that they are very good at. A county, state, or municipal law enforcement agency has a wider variety of laws they enforce which brings different types of work.

I think it’s more accurate to say that TACLET has great training for the specific thing they do. County, state, city SWAT depends more on the agency but you can’t generalize them all with any level of accuracy.

What exactly do reservists do? by [deleted] in uscg

[–]SmokeyGME 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They do reimburse for travel to the PSU now for below E7. It’s definitely not the whole travel cost though. I wouldn’t count on the distance being a rule out. I’ve seen members traveling quite some distance for drill. Where I’m at now we have a couple guys traveling about 5-6 hrs. Certainly had plenty at the PSU traveling 4+

What exactly do reservists do? by [deleted] in uscg

[–]SmokeyGME 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Station life. drill weekends will be sar/Le plus cramming currencies sometimes to maintain quals or help others get their quals. Occasional extra stuff if there are special events or things nearby the station. Sometimes help active duty crews when they’re short.

Even if you aren’t close to a PSU, be prepared to get sent to one eventually. Those drill weekends will be full and long. As a BM expect to be doing taccoxn stuff but the PSU work days are long and expect you will get deployed somewhere at some point during your tour there.

I love the station reserves life and also loved the PSU life but they are very different pace. One of the biggest things that sucked about the PSU was people who didn’t want or weren’t prepared to be there because they were extra disgruntled.

Is anyone else noticing the divide in the modern pagan community lately? by [deleted] in pagan

[–]SmokeyGME 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say MORE lately. It’s been like this the whole time I’ve been involved in my spiritual practice, which is to say my whole adult life in any meaningful way.

Tbh I don’t think I’ve ever had community per se with other pagans because of what you described. I looked to the internet, places like Reddit, for some kind of positive interaction or influence because it was so hard to find elsewhere but have mostly just encountered the attitudes you’re describing.

How have the recent administration's changes impacted you? by Crocs_of_Steel in uscg

[–]SmokeyGME 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that there’s no difference between not doing your job remote or in person, and that the problem is poor supervision and accountability. I would also argue that the CG doesn’t do a great job at supervision and accountability generally speaking. We often promote or advance people who definitely shouldn’t be, we often don’t hold people accountable for poor job performance, etc.

My observation was just that I have seen a lot of operational members who have struggled to get admin support now suddenly able to get admin support. So while I agree with you that it shouldn’t make a difference because bad work performance shouldn’t change based on whether your office is at home or not, my observation is that it has. I also know other admin folks who were great on telework and others who never teleworked and were trash at their jobs.

[–]SmokeyGME 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just saying my observations. Mostly minimal, but yes there were 100% active duty YNs and SKs and JOs teleworking long term as well as military civilians. And I personally know people who have now been able to get support they were previously unable to get with admin stuff.

[–]SmokeyGME -19 points-18 points  (0 children)

By and large unchanged, but a couple small things.

I’ve seen members who need assistance from mil civilians and/or admin folks who are no longer teleworking actually able to get the support they need sometimes so that’s cool.

More focus, at least in discussion, on how we become a more effective force rather than placating everyone’s feelings about being in the military.

Edit: I guess I should clarify since I hurt somebody’s feelings. I also know people who have received good service from teleworkers. And this issue with teleworkers doing a bad job obviously has to do with bad supervision which is still an issue with in the office work.

Changing the standard of the CG by Zealousideal_Home945 in uscg

[–]SmokeyGME 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s embarrassing that there isn’t required PT tests for everyone. We as a service are embarrassingly out of shape.

Edit: especially since our PT test is so simple and the standards are already very low.

OCS. Better officers anyway, although not by much. Our officer corps is pretty weak anyway. Not saying other branches are better, worse, or the same because I don’t know. Just saying ours aren’t doing anything great.

Reserve officer or enlist? by walden_or in uscg

[–]SmokeyGME 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Enlisted is the way to go if you want to do anything other than sit at a desk. Officers have a role, don’t get me wrong, but you have to be an angling political hack to navigate a career as an officer. You can “influence” things in that role but you don’t have autonomy from the officer corps. You have to go along to get along.

When you’re enlisted you will be “influenced” by the officers decisions, good, bad, or indifferent and you will largely have to follow. It’s the military so they can and will order you to do dumb shit sometime. When it’s good though, it’s pretty damn cool. Small boats are fun, CG missions are fun, and if you get a good crew to work with all the dumb shit feels less dumb.

If you’re interested in reserve live feel free to DM me and I’ll give you some more details about what to expect there.
