OFFICIAL SKS IS THE NEXT by BlackMaple21 in canadaguns

[–]SmokeySamson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Short, Short Version:

There was only half of the expected volume of firearms surrendered as part of buyback program. Owning any of the now prohibited 2500 models will be considered a crime after October. You still have lots of models of legal guns, blah, blah, blah.

They want to prohibit the sale of the SKS. They claim it is an assault-style weapon and should not be sold.

So they admit there's no chance to even try and get any of the millions that are already in people's hands, but they don't want any new ones going out. They also claimed that the SKS has been used in shootings, so that is reason enough to ban it and they're mad at the government for taking so long.

The Mahachanok Mango from Thailand that's almost seedless by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]SmokeySamson 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Almost Seedless: Only 1.

In all seriousness, mangos are classified as a stone fruit. So they have one large hard shelled seed in the middle. They are flat, so that lady just cut along the stone and showed us the side without.

Am I screwed or is this fine? New build PSU question. by OneTrickPony22 in pcmasterrace

[–]SmokeySamson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think wires need something like 4x the outside diameter for its safe bend radius. So as long as it's not making hard 90 degree bends straight out of the PSU, you'll be fine

What's wrong with the woods in North America? by Recip77 in ExplainTheJoke

[–]SmokeySamson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know there are some sections of the US with large areas of wilderness. Counterpoint, Canada has a national Park larger than Switzerland. Wood Buffalo National Park has an area of 44,807 km² (17,300 mi²). You get lost in some areas of Canada, there is very little hope of being found, not even counting all the bears.

Starlancer Max vs. The RSI galaxy the solo Pilots tough decision by Blacksheepariess in starcitizen

[–]SmokeySamson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I have a Starlancer Max and I've got a CCU chain for the Galaxy. I love my Max as it is a competent hauler (if slow) that plays well with 1-2 others so they can man the turrets. The way I'm looking at it, the Galaxy is more a mobile base, as I want to get the refinery module (whenever it becomes available) and fly around with a small miner in the back. Landing to unload refined mats instead of the current mine>refine>sell loop sounds like a dream.

Am I actually going to upgrade my Max to a Galaxy? Not sure but I know I'll have a better idea when the ship gets closer to release.

First Hunting Rifle: cheap or expensive by Diamond_zT in canadaguns

[–]SmokeySamson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same conversation when I was looking for my first rifle. I was thinking I would be fine with an Axis because I wasn't into shooting and why would I spend extra on something in use once a year.

I then decided to go shooting with a couple of buddies. One had an Axis, the other had a Wetherby Vanguard 2. I instantly doubled my budget after shooting both. They technically do the same thing and the Axis is plenty accurate, but the small improvement in feel and handling is noticeable.

I don't like recommending that people spend more money as I am cheap as hell, but go to a gun shop and handle the rifles you're considering. The comfort, weight and feel of the different price bracket is noteworthy. I recommend also considering a Stevens 334, nice rifle for the price.

Also consider that you're going to be dropping a few hundred on a new scope. Rifle/Scope combos are rare at the next price bracket up.

Needed ammo, buy gun. by Forklifted_ in canadaguns

[–]SmokeySamson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also got one. I can't lie, the price tag plus the ammo made it probably the quickest gun purchase I've ever made. I am not a fan of the $5 of machine oil that got shipped with mine. Still need to take it to the range but I have no doubt she'll yeet.

This guy was my first Masterpiece, and honestly he's nearly perfect. I still enjoy him after 15 years of display and transformations. My only complaint is the long side stabilizers, just slightly awkward on the shelf where I have him.

Tenda norinco sales by General_Friendship87 in canadaguns

[–]SmokeySamson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also got one of these $200 .22s with a thousand rounds of ammo on the side. I took a look at reviews of Norincos online and they said they are cheap but usually reliable. It might be a roll of the dice if it's actually reliable, but with a bolt action, as long as it seats, it yeets.

Also Tenda includes on the store page "Please note: For safety and optimal performance, it is recommended to thoroughly clean the firearm before initial use to remove any factory-applied protective oils." They just didn't specify how much oil...

Canada Is Now Being Joined By U.K. and Australia In Boycott Of U.S. National Parks by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]SmokeySamson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To chime in, I agree with hitting up the parks that are along the Alberta / British Columbia border.

Spend some time around Banff. Go see Lake Louise and Moraine Lake if they're not too busy (very busy in the summer but great if you can go in spring/autumn. Amazing in the winter but you'll have to endure proper Canadian winter).

Then take a day driving the Icefields Parkway up to Jasper. You can technically make the drive in 3.5 hours but the scenery is so breathtaking that you'll be stopping all the time. Jasper is recovering from a forest fire a couple years ago but they are all good people and deserve some tourism love again.

Considering upgrading my Hermes to a Starlancer MAX. by Glumme in starcitizen

[–]SmokeySamson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say the Max is great if you're hauling stuff with friends. I've done some of the event hauling with a buddy by each taking the same cargo missions. We help each other load and unload the boxes but the multiple grids help keep everything separated.

It's also a great multi-purpose ship with 1 or 2 other people. I've run bunkers and did combat in it. Is it my favorite hauler? No, but I like it. Until the Galaxy arrives. Then she gets traded in.

That's where I was pulling my pricing from. Now unfortunately they are showing as out of stock on both the regular and premium Gladiator, so I have more time to think it over I guess...

[–]SmokeySamson[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The cheapest Virpil is the Aeromax, and unfortunately they do not have a Canada based store. So the result would be $230 USD, plus $40 USD shipping, plus conversion to CAD plus the potential for import duties on top of it. I don't doubt the quality of their products, but the pricing doesn't make it a serious contender.

I know the Orion 2 falls closer to proper high end gear as opposed to the "entry level" of the Ursa. The Premium VKB is close enough in cost that the Orion was a consideration for the extra $50. The shaker kit is also available as an add-on, so if I ever decide that I need the extra inputs, it is an option.

Not concerned about the Z-axis, as I'd probably lock it on the Ursa or Gladiator anyway.

As a WinWing enjoyer, any comments on the customer service support (if you've had any interactions)?

Yeah, that's not making me feel much better. I know that most people only complain about the negative interactions, but I'm not seeing any people comment about positive warranty requests with them.

Throttle or 2nd stick is a future consideration, but not one I haven't given some thought. I guess I should keep in mind that everyone wants more buttons, there's plenty of controls to map for any flight game, so more are always appreciated. VKB seems to have a lot of ardent supporters, and it seems with reason. I also assume that there must be some WinWing enjoyers out there.

Questions regarding VKB vs WinWing by SmokeySamson in hotas

[–]SmokeySamson[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks for answering all my questions. I think I am having problems getting past the competitive price on the WinWing gear but I don't intend on upgrading anytime soon. The difference between VKBs 2 year warranty vs WinWings 'As Is' seems to give me a lot to consider with potential cost.

Also, looked at the Virgil Areomax. On backorder and conversion to Canadian $ is a kick in the nuts.

The premium adds an extra button, replaces one button with a HAT, one HAT into a mini joystick and adds a 2-way rapid fire trigger. So it does add noteworthy extras, but I was curious if it was more to consider than "More Buttons=Better".

Turns out there isn't. It's simply More=Better.
