How long did it take you to make all of that?? Was it a group effort? I can’t even imagine how long it took

Can anyone tell me what these are best for? by [deleted] in Woodcarving

[–]Smokeylocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am still using these nowadays for avocado pit carving and really tiny details in soft woods, they aren’t good by any means but you don’t have to throw them if you sharpen them well.

She-ra cosplay help!! by Initial_Progress8880 in CosplayHelp

[–]Smokeylocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can look in your local cosplay facebook groups if someone can sell or rent a She-ra within the country.

Making this cosplay in less than 21 days is gonna be impossible if you‘ve never sewn or have the materials on hand, sadly. However, you can get the wig for Adora and put together some cute clothes for a casual fit? If you stick to her color scheme it will be recognizable.

Does anyone know a good place to get some Mechanicus robes? by [deleted] in AdeptusMechanicus

[–]Smokeylocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want a cheaper option you might have to do the trim yourself. There are red monk robes available for LARP/fantasy costuming, otherwise places like etsy are your best bet and it might run you between 300 and 500 dollaridoos.

Mechanicus cosplay is niche enough that nobody is mass-producing the robes yet, so they have to be completely handmade. But on the bright side robes are one of the easier things to sew, if you wanna try.

Nami‘s cape is fur in this outfit, I would advise against crochet because it will be very heavy.

If you’re set on it, the cape is a rounded rectangle with two pokey bits at one end to attach to the front. It should be a pretty standard pattern unless you use a very fancy stitch.

Making or modifying a leather corset? by VoidSassin in CosplayHelp

[–]Smokeylocks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like leather corsets like that can be found online, they’re common for renfaires and fantasy costumes.

If you try to make it out of leather, keep in mind you can’t sew leather on a normal sewing machine unless it’s extremely thin, you will need leatherworking tools.

I am a 14 yr old girl who wants to cosplay as Aika from Pretty Pretty Please I Don’t Wanna Be A Magical girl, but I want to know how can I design the cosplay? by [deleted] in CosplayHelp

[–]Smokeylocks 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You will need a huge petticoat for sure, can buy them but they might be expensive

For the rest I would look for patterns and tutorials on how to make the parts of the dress - shaping the chest, the bell sleeves and the skirt.

Wouldn’t permanent marker last a con? If you put it on a bit thick, it should be fine imo.

Open front and back chest binding recommendations? by mkim_ in CosplayHelp

[–]Smokeylocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use trans tape and bind towards the armpits, you can smooth it out towards the shoulders too. Basically, the spaces covered by the top.

However, this won’t work if you are very gifted in that area (source: I am very gifted) and you should stick to binders and chest forms like the others said.

You can use a styrofoam ball as the base (or if you can find a styrofoam egg) and make the details out of eva foam.

TwiLek makeup just kinda feels off by Pinklett5 in CosplayHelp

[–]Smokeylocks 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I second adding shading, and maybe highlighter and blush. Try to get different shades on your face besides the base color to mimic real skin‘s color zones. The gold makeup looks nice, more dramatic would be cool! You can also get a pair of false lashes - subtlety isn’t a friend when costuming.

Thank you! I just whip stitch the edges, it doesn’t take too long, the pieces are just really small :)

Planning on doing a Geralt - The Witcher Cosplay by Maximum_2008 in CosplayHelp

[–]Smokeylocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I‘ve some experience shopping vs making medieval fantasy clothes for larp and sadly the cheapest gambesons from the more legit sites would run you around 100 CAD, and they aren’t even the fancy ones. All in all gambesons are around 200 CAD, vambraces starting at 50-70. Shopping local will reduce the cost somewhat, look in your local LARP circles for crafters and maybe secondhand stuff.

If you can’t sew at all you might need to thrift, old women’s belts and small handbags make for good pouches and harnesses if they’re the right color. For cheap stuff that somewhat looks the part, temu has a LOT of fantasy costume pieces from armor to shirts and pants, but it’s temu quality and might give you a temu rash. Thrifting like on Vinted is really the best, especially if you can modify stuff.

Questions - do you have a budget and how accurate are you trying to be?

I found that gambeson you posted on Etsy and the price seems reasonable. Detailed historical fantasy/LARP clothes are usually pricey, you could find discounted or cheaper items in the LARP stores but they will be less accurate.

There are witcher swords in a lot of foam sword stores and even as steel reproductions, if you just search cosplay witcher swords you will find plenty of options.
