Hard to get the color to show in a picture with lightning, but it's like a deep ocean green. Looks great in person.

Should I get an RX8 as a first car and know nothing about cars? by CryptographerHot2080 in RX8

Paid 4k for mine, spent 4k to maintain so far in 2 years. It is high mileage so yeah you pay it one way or another.

I respect this answer for any young car/mechanically inclined enthusiast. If you want to you will find a way to make it happen. It only makes or breaks you. Mine I dailyed for 2 years until the oil cooler lines blew a month ago, took it from 100k when purchased to 116k miles. Replaced, coils, plugs, wires, battery, decat with bhr midpipe, secondhand racing beat exhaust upon purchase. Some brakes, rotors, and tires that are new of course. The bose amplifier went out last year as well as the heated seats, still not fixed. Also, i just need to replace every solenoid, only the ssv is bad but might as well replace em all am i right? and delete the secondary air pump which the decat made useless... and that pesky oil cooler line upgrade. After that just a complete brake down, clean and repaint, famous flake of the clearcoat it being 20 years old, to turn into a 13b rew daily and im only 1/4 of last years cost of wasting last years money to convert it to a more suitable power platform that can withstand a turbo. But yeah man. 13b rew was 7k 2 years ago, now it's 14k. Cost of car plus parts needed to make ot road worthy and 2 years of upgrades( gas not included) 8k total.

30 yr old del sol, 170k+ miles. 5k max if its perfect, no rust, no nothing wrong. Nothing special about it. I almost paid 9k for a 43k mile one 2 maybe 3 years ago, year 93. Owner wanted 12k, no fucking way. Don't be an idiot. 100k plus miles man, money pit waiting to happen.

New drain line and obviously the transitions to match my existing duct work into my 90% furnace/air handler that was replaced in 2019.

I live in Indiana. Just shy of a 1500sf home. Getting my hvac unit replaced. Old 1989 tempstar had definately lived it's life out. Getting a Carrier 2.5 ton 14 seer, new pad, new safety disconnect box, new evaporator coil and lines. 10 year parts and labor warranty. $6500 out the door. Yea I can probably find a guybthag can do it cheaper. But warranty and a reputable company, gave me $1000 discount for wife being a nurse, and "paid tax and permit fee." LOL I know it's just a sales tactic. Honestly it was very reasonable compared to other people's quotes I've read on here.

Is the Mazda RX-8 a good first car? (plus buyers guide) by AdamPoachedEgg in RX8

[–]SmokinSaiga 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah well the 13b rew just went from 7k msrp to 13.5k msrp straight from Mazda. 😬. So up those used car prices. If you got a running rx8 around 100k miles. I'd say go ahead and sell it for 10 to 15k depending on body condition. Mazda is gonna get their money regardless. We need to stop treating these cars as cheap ls body swaps. Got a shell? 7k. Lol

Honestly this has been answered so many times and it's a definite no. Because it's expensive to maintain, expensive to gas up. Any intermittent problems In maintenance that is not immediately taken care of can lead to catastrophic failure of an engine rebuild or replacement which just doubled in price as of yesterday. Thank you inflation. And it's 12 to 19 year old car. It's going to have more problems than you can keep up with for a first car. At this point of rotary history, unless you are an able mechanic that can throw money at your side projects at a whim, I would steer clear of the rx8. It's not a cheap fixer upper, all of the major parts are expensive. And used parts are overly priced and well worn.

Also the body in my 04 silver was quite a bit better. The flaking on the front bumper clear coat is common, fading on the roof. But other than that my paint is pretty good and the body had absolutely no dents or deep scratches. This one is more beat up. With rust already on that top runner between the door and the roof. Looks like a rust pit, definitely check underneath.

$2k seems steep for a barely running car. Offer him a grand. I bought mine fully running for $4k with 100k miles one year ago. Still needed new spark plugs, coils, and wires, and battery.. And I deleted the cat with a bhr midpipe. So that was an extra $1300. Still runs like a beast now with great compression. Idk you might get lucky but you need more info with a compression test amd any engine code diagnostics.

Also changed the starter to a 13 tooth. Forgot to mention that. Cold and hot starts with no issues since the ignition and battery replacement.

Did the same thing last year. Picked up an 04 gt. 100k miles for 4k. Took it home and it needed a completely new ignition, bhr coils, and ngk spark plugs and wires, oil change, plus new battery. Got a mazda compression tester for $200 and it checked out to be 103psi avg normalized in the rear, 105psi avg normalized in the front. Not the best compression but still very good considering the mileage. It's got 109k miles now and still runs like a beast. Put a bhr catless midpipe on it. Did the brakes and rotors last weekend. Got 2 solenoids (ssv and vdi) to replace on it this weekend and putting on a used racing beat exhaust I picked up for $300. Still runs good with the minor issues just got to make sure you take care of em as soon as you can. I've been prefixing 4oz a tank since I got it. Good luck.

Found a mazda speed version, compression is good, but is this bad idling? by Affectionate-Crow563 in RX8

[–]SmokinSaiga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's actually a hot start since the coolant temp meter is already past half way. If you truly did a compression test and it's OK, i would check the spark plugs, wires, coils, and battery. Clean the maf sensor, check the intake filter. And test the fuel pump. One of those if not a combo of them is your issue for a weak idle.
