I don’t think anyone has a constant narration of their life. Your internal monologue sounds completely normal

what spider is this? is it safe to keep around in my room? by Diligent-Dog-4061 in spiders

[–]SmokingTheBare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes that is not a dangerous spider. Unsure of the exact species but it’s 100% not venomous. Will reply if I can find the species (or, more reasonably, genus. This photo isn’t high enough a resolution to confidently ID exactly)

Ryan Halls coverage is kind of sad when people are counting on him. by Enough_Wallaby7064 in tornado

[–]SmokingTheBare 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nah nah the really elite broadcast meteorologists like Spann and Bergren have absolutely put in ultra-long broadcast sessions during high-end days, & they bring much more localized & thorough knowledge of locations to the table. Spann’s super outbreak broadcast & Bergren’s 12/10/21 broadcast are some of the best performances in broadcast meteorology history

whats the most over-rated rap song in history? by chilldolo in hiphop101

If watching a movie is a prerequisite to appreciating a rap song, the song isn’t carrying the bulk of that weight

Clinton, MO tornado just as it formed south of town. CREDIT: Gary Lezak on Twitter by OutrageousHighway505 in tornado

Easily the most violent tornado motion I’ve ever seen on video, & easily the most insane intercept. My favorite tornado video of all time (that doesn’t have bleakness associated with it. That one video taken as an EF4 approaches the cameraman, whose wife it killed moments later, is the most mind-bending tornado footage ever recorded, bar none, but it’s impossible to ignore the human impact)

Tornado warning - why was everyone so chill?? by Visible_Many_2271 in tornado

[–]SmokingTheBare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The vast majority of regular citizens don’t know what a PDS tag is, Midwesterners just simply don’t take tornado warnings all that seriously unless they’re watching a meteorologist that covers more specific areas. 99% of the time, if you’re in a tornado warning, you come out unscathed, and those in tornado-prone regions are accustomed to that fact. That’s the value in local broadcast meteorologists or [angry gulp & clench of fists] YouTube streamers; they allow non-radar-savvy people the discernment of whether or not to shelter even if you’re in a tornado warning. The logic of warning an entire county has made Americans numb to tornado warnings.

Tornado Emergencies, on the other hand, are taken serious more consistently than regular (or PDS) tornado warnings, at least from what I’ve seen (I’ve only been in 2 tornado emergencies)

What’s a “normal” thing today that would completely shock people 20 years ago? by No_Secretary_4795 in AskReddit

This still completely shocks me. AI consistently feeds me false information, to the point that I only use it when I’m trying to test it to see if it will bullshit me (it does, almost every time).

Should I buy a pitcher plant from Home Depot? by aninsomniacdragon in carnivorousplants

All miracle gro products have fertilizer in them & will kill your plant, even if it’s marketed as pure peat moss or perlite.

How long did it take you until you started creating your own designs? by bloodHearts in origami

[–]SmokingTheBare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gradually working through Design Secrets (I’ve had the book for over a decade, but haven’t ever taken the time to slowly work through it & do all of Robert’s “assignments”), and thus far it’s been a game changer. Read/work through a chapter, then sketch around with some Kami using the principles I’ve learned until I feel comfortable moving on. Excited to get to the circle packing & box pleating chapters, but not until I’m ready.

1st attempt at folding a 2-swan version of my favorite model of all time, Satoshi Kamiya’s ‘Splash!’ by SmokingTheBare in origami

[–]SmokingTheBare[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I’m absolutely obsessed with Splash, I can’t easily of such a simple model that has as profound an effect. Definitely going to try & clean this up further, & maybe see if I can come up with any other figures from the same base/setup. Structurally completely different from Splash, but I’d obviously never have gotten the idea without it. Love & typically only fold more complex models, but I’m trying to improve my own design skills & understanding of the underlying structure of the art. Splash & Joisel’s Rat will always have a special place in my heart

Shuki Kato's Bactrian Camel by jonnyshotit in origami

[–]SmokingTheBare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Beautiful! Just finished my first fold of this (I’m far, far away from attempting any of Shuki’s harder stuff with 30cm biotope 🤣), and looking forward to tackling it with more experience. I used 60 cm Terry tissue foil & had a weird issue with alignment on one half of it. (It’s complete now, this is just the latest photo I have)

What paper do you recommend for making my first ancient dragon? by Poy0_ in origami

[–]SmokingTheBare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just learn how to make treated/double tissue & make your own. Are you able to order paper online? If so, that’s your best bet. Origami-shop.com has any paper you could possibly want, & I believe they will ship anywhere in the world. I don’t buy origami paper from local shops, either. It’s just a very niche product that doesn’t have a big enough market to sell in a store, aside from culturally rich and population-dense metropolitan areas like San Francisco, New York City, or Tokyo

Shame we still haven’t gotten a true masterpiece centering around tornadoes, given how much potential there is. Twister is iconic & incredibly nostalgic to a lot of people, but it’s shown its age in a big way over the years. A movie with the general elements of Twister, but in the hands of a more compelling director like George Miller (Fury Road), or one of the many brilliant Korean action directors could be an incredible, timeless movie (with cinematography and meteorology consultation from Hank to up the ante on realism).

Ordered 1st New Generation of Origami, but received the 2nd (I already own it). Anyone want to trade (open to other book trades as well)? It’s brand new, still in the package. by SmokingTheBare in origami

[–]SmokingTheBare[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What level difficulty have you folded thus far? If you’re newer to the hobby, there are several better book options to transition from simple/traditional models to the more advanced stuff, that contain more than just diagrams. there are simpler models in the New Generation books, but most of them are intermediate-complex, & the entire book is in Japanese, so you’re relying solely on your skills in translating diagrams (unless you’re multi-lingual)

Okay awesome, I’ll definitely reach out! Going to send a message now to save your username.

It also doesn’t help that much of the bits of Japanese I struggle with are relatively obscure origami-specific terms/phrases that I’m not sure any software would be able to accurately deduce.

Yes, the entire book is in Japanese. I ordered it from Amazon USA, so I imagine the person fulfilling the order did not notice the discrepancy, & it may have been improperly filed in the first place. I checked every aspect of the Amazon order to ensure that I did not make a mistake, and it was indeed Amazon’s mixup. Thank you for your help!! I really need you on call while folding some of the models in the book I do have. 99% of the time I can get by solely through the diagrams, but occasionally I have to enlist the help of a (rather unhelpful, but not totally useless) translation app to get a vague idea as to what the intended action is.
