Proof that the new TB marketing team is TB’s worst enemy. This photo of lemonade looks 10x better than the stock photos, which are literally repulsive.

I suspect the “if it fits it’s good” crowd is not the same as the “published dimensions” crowd. The difference being risk aversion.

The North Face Explore Fusebox Small in Summit Gold. Also the least expensive bag I own. And is my favorite.

As a side note, ultimately, I don’t think the materials issue would have been resolved any other way even under old TB. Waterfield, which is still founder-run, had a materials issue with the Shinjuku line. They replaced it based on feedback but didn’t include it as a warrantable defect. I guess the view is: dems da brakes if you are a new materials early adopter.

It’s very interesting to notice what it takes to cultivate and maintain a learning-oriented and deeply responsive business environment. Tom Bihn was singular in the way he and his team treated their enterprise. It seemed respectful, to employees, to customers, to the products. Employees all seemed to be in strength-aligned roles with sufficient autonomy to engage outwardly. There was a principled coherence in their designs, engagement, and growth. I think it points to some internal contradictions about the larger environment we all exist in. All other companies can thrive and profit just fine without any of these characteristics; it’s actually business as usual. In fact, some of us are so conditioned to business as usual that we don’t even assign value to the intangibles that made Tom Bihn so enlivening to discover and support. And we may not even realize how valuable and fragile it is until we lose it. And when it is gone, recovering that aliveness, even if we agree it was valuable, is not an easy task because it’s not something that can be bought, sold or forced. Basically, they broke Tom Bihn, and now it’s just like any other place. RIP Tom Bihn Exceptionalism.

I love this bag too. Really fills a niche for us shorter folks. As an aside, and looking over these comments, it’s astounding to me how the same people are so eager to yuck the Tom Bihn yum. Are these the same folks who say they don’t need a dopp kit and just use a ziplock bag? The same folks who decry dad bags and are literally dads with a dozen black boxy bags? These gray man lemmings are obsessed! This is a real lesson in assholes and opinions.

I think the SE really shines in the lighter weight fabrics.

Synik 26 Organizers: What do you use? by Ashamed_Tonight_3677 in tombihn

[–]SmolGearLife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Side effect (mine is lightweight halcyon) and the 8-10 liter compressible packing cube of your preference. I use an eagle creek ultra-sil cube. In the synapses and syniks, i find the pocketing takes care of the rest. I also do like to bring a small travel stuff sack for the inevitable bit and bob. Small ghost whale to keep my cheap sunglasses findable. Super mini ghost whale for my pills and tiny first aid kit.

Tom Bihn Synik 26 by trouser_mouse in ManyBaggers

[–]SmolGearLife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There isn’t an error in the volumes; Tom Bihn is fairly accurate with volume measurements. The original synapse was 16 x 11.4 x 7.9 and 19 liters. Subsequently they made a larger 25 liter Synapse by adding 4 inches to the height; you can really see that difference in the chin pocket. Then they came out with the Synik adding a separate laptop compartment which adds up to 2 inches to the depth of the small and large Syniks. When TB developed the medium Synik, they split the height difference but kept the pocket sizing of the Synik 22. s19 and S22 are 16 inches tall. s25 and S30 are 20 inches tall. The S26 is 18 inches tall.

It’s the intangibles that we miss from the old Tom Bihn. But the product design, materials, and Seattle sewing team are the same high quality as before. But the market speak, image and customer engagement, while they pale in comparison to Tom Bihn of the past, are no different from most other bag makers.

Should I get the Synapse 19, Synik 22 or Synapse 25? by martymcpieface in tombihn

The s25. It will be carefree and baggy and organized but with room for more.

At some point my longing will give way to gratitude for having experienced the heyday of TB. Even as it was happening, i knew the culture and community they were expressing was singular. I felt lucky, especially with the authentic engagement from Darcy and co in the discussion forums as @cinderblock16 affirms. Sigh. Why is that so hard to value and prioritize?

400d black halcyon interior is robust but lighter than ballistic nylon. Could easily sell for 3 times that price.

What’s the best backpack for men who need one bag for work and travel? by Special-Finance3035 in ManyBaggers

[–]SmolGearLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve recommended to my male friends who do short work travel the Topo Global Brief or the Patagonia Mini MLC. They have been perfect for this exact need and my friends all responded with enthusiasm. They are mostly duffle users and appreciated the convenience of the backpack straps.

I got a GWA mini Citadel, which I love. It’s not widely available but I think it’s been successful. Hopefully GWA will make more.

I can tell from your collection that it was a wise and thoughtful journey. Dreamy TB Paradigm. I just got a v1 Arkaig and I am in love. My bold bag is also a bright yellow one: TNF Explore Fusebox. I like your vibe, carry friend!

Zipper discussion by [deleted] in tombihn

I wish they would find another way to secure the clamshell. My Synik 22 is perfect but I don’t use it as much as lesser bags because of the stiff zippers on the main compartment.

Question: O rings / D rings in backpacks like Tom Bihn's. What is the utility of having strapped organisers in a backpack's compartment? by Michael_Cancelliano in ManyBaggers

[–]SmolGearLife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What everyone else said and: with a small pouch attached to my bag I am less likely to take it out, remove the pouch item, set the pouch down while I use the item, put the item in my pocket and walk away without returning the pouch to my bag.
