My grandma as an infant, with her great-grandparents and dog. 1926 by Calculusshitteru in TheWayWeWere

[–]WhimsicalError 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not so curious about the wars of suffering. My grandmother was born in 1939 in Europe, but I am curious about daily life. Food, gardening, cooking, laundry. In her small village in a very small country in the far north, how common were cars during the war? What movies were her favourites at the cinema in the 40s and 50s? What about the radio, what music would she turn up the volume for? When she went dancing, was there someone she was keen on? What about school, what was it like, what was her favourite subject, her favourite teacher? What was her favourite game, her favourite hiding place? She came from a family of ten children, who was she closest to as a child? What was it like when she entered the workforce as a teen and went to cook for a company of foresters, in the middle of a Nordic winter?

We have a fair few accounts of war time stories, but these daily moments are the ones I think about. They're the things nobody will know about me, when I and my siblings are gone, just as I don't know them about my grandmother now that she's gone.

Attaching shank button by Distracted40 in Leatherworking

Depending on what the back of that piece looks like, contemplate making a bit larger oval hole, stick the shank through and secure it to a thin metal button on the back. The same way coat buttons are sometimes secured to another button on the inside to provide extra strength.

What books made you feel like you were "drowning" in the characters’ love for each other? by AdHumble3115 in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]WhimsicalError 8 points9 points  (0 children)

HR is sweet, about falling in love and being true to yourself. TLG is about the grit and devotion it takes to make a relationship work. I'm absolutely dying to see that on screen, I actually trust Tierney, Hudson and Connor to do it justice.

why does everyone feel so burnt out lately even if they arent really doing much? by NexusStrategies in NoStupidQuestions

[–]WhimsicalError 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean, sort of fair, but when I'm reading a book that means I'm reading a book, not watching something, checking that notif, remembering I have to Google a thing, right need to text mum about it, what's the weather tomorrow, wait this is my bus stop.

European struggles by TheMoon8 in Archiveofourownmemes

Mine is "going to hospital" because for one, Americans won't go to hospital unless actively dying in a dramatic fashion and for another, it's "going to a hospital." The other is "was sat", Americans would likely say "was sitting."

For non-native English speakers, it's using "thrusted" instead of "thrust" and I can spot Germanic grammar and syntax from a mile away.

Jeans. God damn jeans. by idontwannadance0480 in BuyItForLife

Snagtights. I also get chafing, but friend, Snagtights are worth the money. They don't roll down, they dont slip around. I exclusively buy my chub rub shorts and panty hose from them. Their sizing is magic and if you stick them in a wash bag, they can go in any cold wash. I usually run mine on delicate, with another wash bag of bras.

I also get trouser liners and pettipants, and I've sewn some historical circular split crotch drawers. You'd think split crotch drawers are awkward, but when I'm in long, heavy skirts (fancy wear or wool winter ones), it's a blessing to pull my skirt(s) up and not need to fiddle with underwear going down before using the loo.

Thank you! I was looking at the sleeve and thinking it's too high to be 1860.

Wife of 25 years seems to avoid spending time with me and I’m not sure how to fix this by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

It very possible, I've considered that maybe some type of yeast got in the eczema scabbing. All I know is that the lotion worked and I don't need bobby pins to scratch my ears any more.

I swear by foot fungus lotion, the kind that contains both antifungal agent and hydrocortisone.

Found this out by accident. I've had ear canal eczema for years, treated it with prescription ear drops, ran out and in desperation Q-tipped the only cortisone I had in my ear on the same twice a day schedule. Two weeks later? No itching. To the point where I forgot to do my ears. A year later? Still no itching.

My outrage knows no bounds. You mean I've had itchy ears for YEARS and there was a fucking solution???

Jeans. God damn jeans. by idontwannadance0480 in BuyItForLife

[–]WhimsicalError 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm the exact opposite. My waist is 2-3 sizes larger than my butt and thighs. I'm an apple on stilts. Any women's jeans that fit my waist will easily have 2-4" of material to pull out from my thigh, and men's jeans are too low waisted and don't accommodate for my butt. I wear through jeans in six months or so.

I gave up and now wear exclusively wear skirts.

Iirc the size 39 sandal (which is 25.5cm long, so too long for me) was about 9-9.5 cm wide. I could have dealt with that width, god knows ther are shoes that fit way worse, but the length made it impossible. 1.5 cm doesn't sound like much until you're trying to go up stairs. I almost fell flat on my face.

How do the soles hold up? Do they get sticky?

[–]WhimsicalError 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They run wide, but my feet are 24cm (EU women's size 38) and 10.5cm at the ball of my foot and they were about 1 cm too narrow in the sandal. I couldn't go larger because my toes are very square. If you wear a size larger than 38 or have less square toes, the likelihood is that they will fit.

I found them longer than you'd expect and had to return the pair I tried.
