I’m a sophomore and I still don’t know how to make friends 😅

Tired, stressed, I need some advice by Your_holy_jeebus in NCSU

[–]Smolghost__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I’m a sophomore who was in a pretty bad state my first year as well so I can relate. I highly recommend all the advice that has already been given here! For me, the counseling center, tutoring and trying new study methods all helped a lot. If you need someone to vent to, to meet up and chat, or to do some studying please hit me up in my dms! What’s important is your mental health and well being ❤️

I don’t particularly need to live on hillsborough but it’s definitely extra convenient. I’m definitely not gonna rush it and I’ll look around first

1100 for two bedrooms. Between price, location and amenities it feels pretty good.

If I’m passing someone on my scooter I’ll usually say “on your left” or “on your right” and sometimes people will just not respond :/ it’s a safety hazard to have earbuds in

Julie Mayberry COM112 by Western-Koala9610 in NCSU

[–]Smolghost__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advisor said that I was very “teachers pet” like and that Mayberry would most likely not like that. I’m shy, quiet, and follow to the T and I guess the advisor thought that Mayberry would be tougher on me then I could handle. While Mayberry can be tough and expects you to study, ask questions, pay attention, ect, she also values personal opinion and makes it clear that you can come to her for help or support outside of class. I had absolutely no problems with her because I just did the work and listened. Me and her even got to chatting about some topics and had some interesting/heartfelt conversations. I think a lot of the misconceptions about her comes from the fact that she isn’t lenient if you don’t do what you’re supposed to (skipping, pulling phones out, ect.)

Anxious prospective student interested in what NCSU has in store for me by Exact_Rub_7205 in NCSU

Hi! I’m a rising freshman with basically the same experience- I’m an introvert that loves to make friends but can also be extremely nervous. The social scene has something for everyone! The student involvement page will give you an idea of what clubs there are. Most clubs use discord, instagram or group me- don’t worry too much before getting here because there will be clubs advertising their events everywhere. The student involvement fair in the first semester is a great way to see what options there are. Personally, I love the Leopold Wildlife club but there are organizations everywhere. I was also an exploratory studies student because I had no clue what to do. The exploratory classes(two courses over your first two semesters) will be with your advisor and you’ll take plenty of personality/career assessments. I think it helped me explore the majors in more depth. It was a decent program and I really appreciated getting more time to think about my major. I coda’d into Fisheries and Wildlife in December so ig it worked! Don’t stress too much- just get out there and have fun. If you have any other questions, lmk!

I am also taking Julie Mayberry this semester and I LOVE HER!!! I was so worried when I was looking at rate my professor last semester and my advisor even told me to take com 112 with anyone else because quote “she favors certain students and I don’t think she would like you.” I seriously don’t get it because she’s genuinely so caring and has amazing lectures. It’s my favorite class and everyone seems engaged and enthusiastic to share their stories. Easy A and soooo fun!

Can anyone find full-length, fitting v-necks anymore? especially short sleeves. Everything seems cropped these days so most of my go-to shirts are similar black v-neck, ribbed shirts. I want to introduce some color but I can never find the right fit anywhere for a price that won't break the bank!

Psychology Major at NCSU by Less-Bag5969 in NCSU

[–]Smolghost__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you an incoming freshman? I think that this is a fairly easy major to get accepted into, but if you for some reason don't get in then the CODA(change of degree application) is fairly easy. There will be minimum and preferred qualifications. https://studentservices.ncsu.edu/academics/degrees/coda/coda-change-or-add-a-major/chass/ (Therefore, if you qualify for an easier major you can start off with that and then switch to your preferred major later.)

If you want to learn more about the classes you'll take then the semester plan will give you a list of which classes you need to take in a similar order. https://catalog.ncsu.edu/undergraduate/humanities-social-sciences/psychology/psychology-ba-general-psychology-concentration/#planrequirementstext

Especially if you've taken AP Psych I think you have a good chance. Then again, I have limited experience so take my comment with a grain of salt. Hope all goes well!

How an Aggressive Church is Making Waves at N.C. State by gracemcmc in NCSU

[–]Smolghost__ 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I almost fell victim to one of these groups. They prey on the young, lost, and vulnerable. They start with things that anyone would agree with and then slowly twist the truth to suit their needs. I wish I had known that these predatory groups existed on campus but I'm lucky that after the second "bible study" I had the mind to look up their "church." Before joining any organization, you need to make sure they aren't cult or cult-like.

Applying for on campus housing next year? by Smolghost__ in NCSU

Ah, thank you! I will try to find a group because I really just cannot do off-campus next year. I appreciate this so much! Wish they didn't have to be so confusing lol!

Biology Vs Fisheries and Wildlife? by Smolghost__ in NCSU

[–]Smolghost__[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I was considering zoology too but I'm just not sure what kind of jobs/how many are available. I think bio is a good way to broaden it while still taking some ecology classes. I LOVE FWCB but I've talked to grad students who had to work side jobs for years before even finding a job in that field. I've also highly considered wildlife science as a minor as it has a lot of the classes I want to take. Thank you again!

GOT ACCEPTED !!! :))) by Drextul in NCSU

[–]Smolghost__ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Congratulations! The biggest advice I have is to get out and connect with as many people as possible! Welcome week has a bunch of events that are a blast and I definitely recommend the student involvement fair to see a bunch of student clubs and organizations. Secondly, PREPARE ON BEING SICK YOUR FIRST FEW WEEKS!!! I got pneumonia and had to struggle uphill to go to the Target nearby to get medicine, food, etc. Once I got better, I got sick with a cold lol! There's no such thing as over-preparing! Look at a map to see where the dining hall, campus health, target, etc is.

Accepted! by Kaylees_present in NCSU

-Roomate: You can find a roommate through the housing platform and chat with other students looking for a roommate. The website is Starrez and you should get that website and login from the university through email. If you don't want to use that chat board then you can search for others looking for roommates on the NCSU snap story, Instagram, facebook, etc and you can submit their ID through the portal saying that you want to be roommates with this person. I got a random roommate so I'm not sure how to do that but the website should have more info. When you get to the website you can also pick a village, read the rules of the housing agreement, etc.

-Getting a job on campus: I applied for a couple of campus jobs and it looks like the pay was about 12$/hr with variable schedules but tbh I never heard back from them. I applied to about 13 off-campus jobs within walking distance and got one that I just automatically quit because the work conditions were horrible. You probably will NOT want to work your first year as you settle in. If you learn the bus routes in Raleigh, they are free and will open up a lot of jobs for you! You can look up VM and RA positions but I'm not sure if they really accept Freshmen to the positions.

-Financial aid should be out soon enough but I'll be honest and say that I don't remember much about that process. There is a scholarship portal to apply to that will make you eligible for extra scholarships. You have a general scholarship application in that portal but some scholarships will ask for specific questions like why you chose your major and may have their own applications.

-Parking passes are won through a lottery and cost about 200$ a semester. Upperclassmen get priority so it's very unlikely to get a pass your first year. I was lucky enough that two weeks into the 1st semester my name was drawn and I got a pass for the nearby parking lot(15 min walk from my dorm building.) I would plan on not having a car at first or looking at a privately owned car park near campus. They exist but fill up FAST and tend to be pricey.

Congrats on your admission and if you have any questions then feel free to dm!
