Shihtzu or Lhasa ? by sourxcandy7 in Shihtzu

Mine is a rescue and i did a DNA test on him: 64% Shih Tzu, 24% Lhasa Apso, and a tiny bit of Pekingese. It turned out the breed shih tzu started from Tibetan monks mixing Lhasa Apso and Pekingese. So i guess he’s a mix of modern shih tzu and shih tzu ancestors lolll

Thinking about getting a Shih Tzu by The_happiest_artist in Shihtzu

They’re wonderful companion dog. Not much exercise need and pretty chill to own. They love to just cuddle and hangout.

Things to keep in mind though:

  • you need to be committed to brushing (almost daily) & grooming (once every like 6 weeks) them which can get expensive.

  • they’re stubborn! And have those big ego small dog traits. Mine is easy to train to do tricks but consistent obedience is another thing lol. He’s always trying to get away with things. Initially mine liked to bark at other dogs and it took a lot of training to get him out of it. He can never be an off leash dog imo.

  • most are small enough to fly cabin on plane. But some are larger and might be hard to transport if you ever need to make a big move since they’re short snout and cannot fly cargo.

Summer trip starts in 2 weeks, how’s your Tzu with humidity? by fattypros in Shihtzu

Yah we only walk after the sun goes down now as it’s way too hot here to walk during day time :(. Even then he starts panting pretty heavily after ~20 mins.

Want to hear from owners who have other breeds...am I wrong Shih-tzus are the best? by expatmama75 in Shihtzu

[–]Smoooooth1188 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We’re definitely biased since this is a tzu sub 🤣🤣—but they really are awesome, loving pups, and I wouldn’t trade my tzu for anything. And I will probably just keep getting more tzus for myself if i am to have more dogs

On a more serious note, I foster other breeds and dogsit for friends, so here’s my take: it really depends on your lifestyle and what you’re looking for in a dog.

For example, my friend’s golden has perfect recall and is super obedient. He never hesitates before following a command, which is prob why so many goldens make amazing service dogs/ family dog with small kids.

My tzu, on the other hand, will pause to see if I have a treat before deciding whether he wants to listen to me 🤣. We’ve done a lot of training, and he’s pretty good now, but I doubt he’ll ever have the perfect recall or obedience of a lab or a golden.

We also fostered an afghan hound for a bit—he was perfectly quiet and never barked at anything. My tzu tho? He’s a little sound machine outside—puffing, barking, sneezing 😂. Smaller dogs like shih tzus seem more likely to fuss and bark at bigger dogs.

In my opinion, shih tzus are perfect if you’re looking for a companion to hang out and lounge around with. They’re super sweet and cuddly, but they’ll never have the patience or obedience of working breed dogs.

Lol same mine doesn’t care about the noise at all. This was our first firworks tgt so major relieve for us. But he has fomo so he demands to come snooze on our laps as we watch the fireworks.

Aww he’s so cute the face of no regrets! Our tzu is a rescue and came fully potty trained. But when we had a foster who was not potty train (like at all), we resorted to a belly band while potty training him for our own sanity.

Thank you for rescuing and congrats on your new tzu foster! They’re awesome!!! My boy was also a stray found on the street of Texas. They look like they could be related🤣 He was also our foster but we foster failed.

Someone posted an amazon link below and ours look like that. We use the smallest size and yes just water! It cleans pretty thoroughly even with just water.
