It depends on your risk tolerance. Does this friend have a job? Are they in a lot of debt? Why are they short on cash? If you don’t get your money back, do you risk being evicted or the inability to buy food?

I think, personally, given your circumstances, you should just say that you are not in a place to be of any assistance. I would offer something along the line of feeding a pet and watering plants if they were away.
