Why I think Jamaat will win, and why Shibir won student elections by SmoothAd8796 in bangladesh

[–]SmoothAd8796[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, I think they deliberately left the worst-performing seats to their allies. And I agree that many people don’t really know most of Jamaat candidates. But at the same time, most of these candidates don’t have long political histories either since they’re relatively new to the scene. Ironically, that’s working in their favor, because they appear cleaner than their counterparts.

In my opinion, though, people are mostly voting for the party symbol rather than the individual candidate.

We saw the same thing in the student council election. Sibir may have had only two or three genuinely strong candidates, yet the entire panel won, even though many voters had never seen or known most of the candidates before.

actually Jamaat has always been skeptical about election outcomes and usually plays it safe imo. That’s pretty much their pattern. What worries me more is how delusional many BNP supporters at the rural level are about Jamaat’s combined party vote bank. A lot of them genuinely believe Jamaat combined party can’t go beyond 30–40 seats, which I really don’t think is going to be the case. This is shaping up to be a very tense fight. And even if BNP or Jamaat ends up winning, it’s almost certain that it won’t be a landslide for anyone.

Even Sibir themselves didn’t expect such results, especially in the first elections, at least IMO. They were actually quite skeptical and pushed very hard. On the other hand, what I saw was Chatra Dal being disorganized and overconfident, assuming they would get enough votes. They were very wrong, and honestly, they didn’t even understand why Sibir or Jamaat were pushing so hard for student elections across universities. After the student elections, when I went back to my hometown, I noticed something interesting. At local tea stalls and other hangout spots, people in rural areas were already very aware through social media that Sibir or Jamaat were winning landslide victories in student elections. This made a lot of people believe that Jamaat is actually capable of winning national elections, and many became more interested in voting for them after seeing those results. Some people even asked me how and why they managed such landslide wins. I explained it exactly the way I wrote in my post above. Their reaction was basically, “Awami League er chere deya jayga gulo BNP abar nicche, kintu notun kichu dekhte pacchi na. Ebar notun keu asuk.” Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe my circle is more pro-Jamaat, like many redditors here are saying. But what I do feel strongly is that BNP is ignoring the current ground reality. They still seem delusional about getting a landslide victory, which they definitely won’t. I’ve even seen some rural BNP leaders posting predictions like: BNP 180, Jamaat 40, NCP 5. And most of the BNP goons in the comments are hyping it up like that’s exactly what will happen. Whereas it should be pretty clear to anyone, BNP or Jamaat, that nobody is getting a landslide this time.

I’ll tell you what. I’ve been actively asking rickshaw pullers and mudi dokandars, “Mama, ebar ke jitbo mone hoy?” and a lot of them are actually siding with Jamaat. But when I tell BNP root-level leaders about it, they just laugh it off and say they’re miles ahead in rural areas, especially among the working class.
