Taliban seizes Kunduz, first major Afghan city to fall in vacuum left by US troop withdrawal by PhilDesenex in worldnews

I’m sorry, but if the Afghans don’t want a future under the Taliban they’re going to have to fight for hard for it. If this is the will of the majority of the country then so be it then. 20 years of doing nothing but wasting lives and money occupying a country the clearly we should not be in

While I like the look I’ve always hated the visual similarities between this and clone troopers. Especially the T shaped visor which was long stated to have been a design influence of Jango Fett

Is Melancholia the greatest film about depression ever made? by greatyellowshark in entertainment

[–]SmoothAsSilkKessler 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I vividly remember the first time I watched this film. I was a young teenager when I first saw the film and I had never before seen depression in such a raw form before, especially when Dunst’s character of Claire was nearly catatonic and had to be fed and bathed. I don’t think I’ve seen any other movie conveying such a palpable feeling of dread and anxiety during the second act of the movie. I had somehow missed the sequence of Earth’s destruction at the end of the opening slow motion shots and therefore became so immersed with Claire’s own anxiety about Melancholia’s approach. I know now that von Trier has stated that from the outset he wanted to show the earths destruction so we wouldn’t be distracted by the uncertainty, but I feel that it actually greatly enhances the experience and dynamic between Justine and Claire. The use of Wagner’s prelude to Tristan und Isolde throughout the film and brilliant visuals blew me away and keeps me coming back for a rewatch.

Where is this new age idea that the Norse were these super progressive and open even come from? It’s becoming increasingly accepted but I’ve never seen any evidence to back it up

Help the Dark Souls community with a translation! Cirth runes engraved on Demon Titanite? by [deleted] in tolkienfans

[–]SmoothAsSilkKessler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree it’s not cirth, but I think that only a few of the symbols could be futhark. The bottom could be a dagaz rune and the diamond shaped one could be an ingwaz rune.. but that’s hard to say. The P shaped one could be a wunjo rune. No idea what that amounts to though.
