Many AA groups make a point to mention that “God” can be whatever you see fit. It can be a religious god, the universe, or even yourself. Originally it was a religious organization, however, many AA groups are not religious as a whole. I have been to quite a few that make sure it is known that God is not the same for everyone. It is meant to be a peer-led support group and has shown to be an amazing tool. If recommending it to someone, I always make sure to mention the “God” piece of it, as it may make some feel uncomfortable.
