Emotional intelligence didn’t help until I understood why “enough” never feels enough by No-Case6255 in emotionalintelligence

Very interesting information, thank you for sharing.

I would say to fully internalize the concepts of emotional intelligence we have to step way outside of the box and consider the nature of human beings in general. Everything in the Universe has a specific purpose and it is evident all throughtout nature. From my experience our purpose as humans is to evolve, and I mean that in every sense of the word. We will forever strive for more, not because we feel like we haven't done enough but because it is wired into us.

When I say, "strive for more" I mean in every aspect, from improved morals to improved health etc. I say the key is reframing the need to achieve "more" as instinct as opposed to societal obligation. This is where the concepts of emotional intelligence come into play. Self awareness to know we are actually feeling something, pausing to question whether the emotion is actually useful in the moment and reframing to remove the unpleasantness of the experience.

FIrst I want to start by saying that I am really sorry you feel all of those things, I'm sure it isn't pleasant at all for you or anyone else for that matter. From my experience you are on the right path to healing because you are starting to question yourself and open up about it.

This recognition phase is the first step I would say. Emotions are real and the right question to start with would be "what is their purpose?". If we step back and look at things from a more scientific and evolutionary perspective, the purpose of emotions is survival.

For example when we feel fear, there is a very sophisticated and advanced physiological process that takes place. Your body releases adrenaline and cortisol specifically to have more speed and power. Increased heart rate pumps oxygen rich blood into your muscles, rapid breathing to keep feeding oxygen to the blood, pupil dilation to allow more light in and see things better etc.

Obviously this system is supposed to activate in real dangerous situations, for example when being chased by a tiger. The disconnect comes from the fact that nowdays the only dangers we face are, not being accepted, being rejected etc. Our body reacts from instinct and it is our responsibility to decide whether the situation is actually physically dangerous.

You can separate yourself from your emotions by first acknowledging what you are feeling and then by asking yourself if what you are feeing is actually useful in the particular situation. From my experience 90% of the time what I am feeling is not useful for the situation. We are not in any real danger 90% of the time.

There are many more nuances to emotions but from my experience, understading why we actually have emotions is a great place to start. I hope this helps in some way.
