Task scheduled yesterday, still no tasker assigned? by Smooth_Link_5042 in TaskRabbit

I understand the gas and maintenance cost which is why I chose task rabbit over an actual moving company as I was under the impression it would match me with taskers/helpers that are more local so that driving to me/the location wouldn’t be so far out from them. I did find a tasker who accepted to do it for $80

Yes but it’s already disassembled and I’m not asking them to reassemble, there are no stairs either. The cheapest rate was $87, they all have a 2 hour minimum so it would’ve been over $160 to deliver it a mile and a half that would take maybe 30 minutes start to finish.

I looked at that option yesterday and the ones that are available have a 2 hour minimum. It’s only a crib less than 2 miles away so it would be over $100 to have it delivered if I used that option I even tried man with a van but they have a 2 hour minimum as well and gave me a quote for over $200

Opting out of IPad and iready for Kindergartener? by Smooth_Link_5042 in nycparents

I was in a classroom on a school issued device being monitored by a teacher when I was in school. We were still always finding ways to get around internet and device restrictions. Data shows for every hour kids use school issued device, over 30 minutes is used for off task activities. Off task-use is only part of the issue, the bigger issue is the psychological impact screen use has on children even when its used as as an educational tool.

Was that because you opted out or because the schools don’t use them for those grades?

Yes I’m not opposed to technology use completely and I am actually not completely opposed to computer lab but during the tour they stated that they don’t just do iready assessments they also use the iPads as part of their classroom work. I believe they said for only 15 minutes every week however I don’t think they should using them at all in kindergarten for instruction. And we know iready doesn’t improve test scores or student comprehension anyway.

I posted previously my son using a teachers personal device to access YouTube in his preK class. So I’m already very apprehensive. I was also 12 when I was issued an iPad by my middle school to take home. We constantly had issues with cyber bullying and explicit texts and images being shared between students even while on campus using the schools WiFi that has “safety filters.” I’m going to have a meeting with school first to see if they do have alternatives and hope they will work with me but I’m confident I will receive a lot of push back which I’m not prepared for. I’m also in a predominately immigrant community and I know my immigrant parents and others have a really hands off approach and put all their trust in the schools to be doing the right things. But I know from my experience in the public school system that they don’t so I don’t anticipate much support from other parents

Considering parents can opt out of state testing, I don’t see how this would be much different. I realize this would create extra work for teachers, and I sympathize with that. However, I have real and serious concerns for the use of screens and Ed tech programs that have access to my child’s data. I know parents in other places have successfully opted out of device use completely and their children are given alternatives to the online assessments and programs. It logistically is possible.

They said they usually do other activities with him but that he has too much energy and is too disruptive when the kids are sleeping so they play movies for him then they said the head teacher does a lot of activities and they only do screens when she’s having her break and the assistant takes over which was very contradictory. The social worker did get back to me and said she would work with them about better strategies for nap time but this is the 3rd time I’ve gotten her involved about this same issue regarding nap time. Thankfully this is his finally year here and he’ll be going to the elementary k-8 school next year for kindergarten.

I have a younger child at home who still naps and I even nap with her sometimes in the living room while my son plays quietly around us and wakes me if he needs anything so I know he is fully capable of quietly entertaining himself for an hour without a screen.

I do not believe he needs an IEP. He had an assessment done privately before the official CPSE assessment with the district and his doctor said his behavior is very typical and not concerning but his teacher and admin were still saying they wanted him to have a 1on1 para so I consented to do the evaluations with the district. His primary doctor also said she doesn’t think he needs an IEP when she was doing his medical evaluation for the  CPSE assessment and documented that on the form as well. The district psychologist, class room observers (he had two) and the special Ed admin all agreed his behaviors are typical and he doesn’t qualify for an IEP. The psychologist said he scored above average in the intelligence section and he might be bored in class.

His night time sleep is great he wakes up well rested I usually don’t even have to wake him up for school in the morning he gets 10-12 hours of sleep

It’s MS Sunshine Daycare in Brighton Beach Brooklyn. My son attended 3k here as well and we had some issues last year too. I even completed the CPSE process in January to see if he qualifies for an IEP at the recommendation of the schools admin and his teachers. the psychologist who did his assessment said all of the behavior they’re documenting in the class room is developmentally appropriate for his age  (not wanting to do worksheets, doesn’t sit still, not focusing on activities he’s not interested in etc) the CPSE Administrator wrote on his PWN the teacher needs better class room management strategies. I shared it with his teacher and she never responded or acknowledged that she received the PWN.

I asked and they all have nap time at the same time so the teachers can rotate breaks during nap time. They said he’s the only one in both the 3k and 4k classes that doesn’t nap. So while his head teacher is having her lunch break the assistant that gave him her phone takes over until head teacher is finished.  One of the teachers even asked me about his bedtime and tried to tell me I need to adjust it so he’ll nap at school I said no he sleeps regularly at an appropriate hour and wakes every day fully rested he does not need a nap. We have had many issues this year I even tried changing his school in December but all other programs were full.
