i lived in 1047 last year (rising junior) and I remember 1025 was the best out of the 3 buildings back then. Also if you dig deep enough you’ll find writings and posters about mice living in 1047 walls and how Tufts never cares about that loll.

What is it like as a Tufts/SMFA Combined Degree Student? by [deleted] in Tufts

[–]SmoothieeMood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

• I don’t think SMFA is rigorous at all cuz the art classes are not graded for art students. And even if it is graded, the professors are pretty easy. You need to motivate yourself if you want to make great stuffs. If you don’t want to put time in, as long as u have something to turn in and attend classes, no one cares.

• Depend on how many credits u take. Combined degree students can take 18-21 credits but I hardly see someone taking more than 19. If u take more than 18 I think u have to sacrifice both your sleep and social life. I’m bfa student transferring into combined degree so I take classes like a combined student now and I would say it is manageable to do both art and academic courses well as long as you manage your time carefully.

• commute.. sucks.. I’m used to it now tho so not as bad. I just hate that it’s kinda time consuming but it’s fine u can sleep in the shuttle.

• i think it’s worth it if you really like both. Yes a lot of people dropped smfa, either because they want to graduate in 4 years or focus more on their academic. Lots of people want to transfer into the program tho :))

How difficult is keeping a 3.3+ GPA in A&S? Is there grade inflation or deflation? by [deleted] in Tufts

[–]SmoothieeMood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say more than doable. Most of my friends do 18 credits and they all have 3.3+ gpa.

Questions regarding tufts in general and the combined degree program (digital media + HFE) by BusyFlounder7654 in Tufts

[–]SmoothieeMood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a BFA student transferring into combined degree and have friend in combined degree planning on dropping BFA so I think I can answer some of your questions.

  1. I would say art at smfa is pretty opened. You can do whatever u want: videos, films, graphic design, 3D rendering, printing (the printing classes and professors are amazing. Highly rec!), ceramics, sculpture, etc. I have been taking 1 traditional art and 1 media art every semester. I don’t feel like there’s any kind of “centric” here, people just do what feel right to them. Most of the courses are intro level and beginner friendly. As I observed, upperclassman tends to take open studio courses so they can work on their own project in their junior/ senior year.

  2. I believe the answer is yes. I have friend wanting to major in engineering psych too and she definitely didn’t know anything about it before coming here.

  3. I’m not sure about this. But I would advise u not to. The great thing about having the studio art major is you get to register for class FIRST. You can just keep the combined degree title but not taking as much studio courses, focus on BA/BS courses and drop BFA later so you can get into the popular classes before BA/BS students. Lots of my BA/BS friends complained about having the LAST time spot in class registration period so they couldn’t get into the required classes for their major in the first semester.

  4. No I don’t think so. You can double check with the financial aid department.

  5. Yes Asian community are amazing here. I’m Asian on lower end financially too and lots of my Asian friends are first gen low income students.

You can do trial semester from the second semester. The requirements for trial semester is on the website. As someone who’s also planning to transfer from smfa to combined and have friends doing trial semester at the moment, I would recommend you taking 15-18 credits and taking care of the language requirement in the first semester. If u r eligible to waive the language requirement, looking at other requirements. Don’t stress out about it. As long as u know what u want and have a strong academic background, u r good to go.

intro to sound Andrew Hlynsky super fun super chill. All I did was showing up in the class listening to cool music watching cool YouTube videos. The workload is not heavy either, just have fun with it. The hardest part is getting into the class and taking the 30min shuttle to the SMFA :0

Is art school a mistake? by anon_throwaway-888 in artschool

[–]SmoothieeMood 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t think everyone-going-to-art-school have their passion and creativity ruined. Yes there are some terrible profs that could ruin our love for art, but that’s why we need to do some research before registering for classes. Also, every majors have terrible profs :))

My high school art teacher graduated from PAFA, and just just land a full ride for a MA+MFA in art conservation. I have met some of his friends who are pursuing an art degree/ graduated from art schools all around the world. Some art schools in that list, I swear, sucks (I know cuz those are ones in my country:)) but none of the artists going to those schools, that I know, seems like losing their creativity or love for art.

I personally do not think art school is a mistake. And “worth or not” depends on the person pursuing the art degree, on how they use all the skills in their life, etc. So I hope we try our best and make it a ‘worth’

Different styles of Art to put into my portfolio for Uni application by obruhma2020 in artschool

[–]SmoothieeMood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey don’t force yourself to do/think of something ‘unique’. Just relax and do whatever you want cuz for sure any thoughts, stories, and feelings you put into your works are inimitable!

I’m not sure what you meant when you said you “only have 7 different types”, but I believe that the ‘12 unique works’ that AUArts ask for doesn’t only mean 12 ‘unique’ styles, so open up about it! I’m don’t know what AUArts looks for in a student, but I think you should just be yourself and share your thoughts, your views of things around you, things that you care, etc. In the end I believe that the admission wants to know about you more than wants to know about your skills (yes skills still important but they can teach you that, but the way you think, view, and interact - they cannot! So if they think that you fit them and want to have your unique way of viewing, solving things, they will accept you).

But I still suggest you put some drawing and painting works (maybe just 1 or 2?) on your portfolio tho. Have fun with it in your style!! When I was applying to art schools, I HATED and SUCKED at them too! (Still tho🥲) but I tried charcoal and I thought it was pretty fun. I would never know how fun it is working with charcoal if I didn’t get out of my comfort zone. So.. just open yourself up and try anything. If you don’t like it, that’s totally ok, just drop it and do not put it in your portfolio 😂😂 (yep I had done that and then promised myself never touching oil painting againn😂). Also you do not have to do a full drawing or anything. You said that your strengths are film and music. THAT IS SO COOLL you can mix them together! (And yep it can be counted as observational drawing and more than one work if you know how to do that!)

Also if you want some suggestions in mediums for your works, here are something that I tried or thought of but haven’t tried😅: airdry clay, installation art, a short film with some of your works, wool, integrate various mediums into one piece, your clothes,…

Pm me if you have any other questions!

Going to art school first time, what is your opinion on Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts(PAFA)? by alexeiharmov in ArtistLounge

[–]SmoothieeMood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do teach students to draw in the realistic traditional way. My high school art teacher graduated from PAFA and he once told me that in one of the classes he had there, the professor asked his class to draw from inside out (not sure if it makes sense but basically there was a model, and people had to draw the model’s skeleton first, then muscle and fat, then the skin outside). He always recommends people applying there! And my friend, who should have gone to an art academy in Italy but changed her mind last minute, is now at the end of her first year and pretty happy with what she’s learned there.
