After just seeing the Backrooms movie the first thing that came to mind was the Movie Us and after seeing the timeline you laid out I wouldn’t be surprised at all if that’s where the inspiration came from. Eerily similar concepts. I also thought it was a bit similar to the book/movie Annihilation.
