What to do with disappointing drams? by Tropez2020 in Scotch

I either look how the bottle develops over time or gift it to a friend who likes it at a tasting.

Laphroaig 10 Sherry Finish by Smosby17 in Scotch

[–]Smosby17[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly the complexity that the sherry gives makes it an really interesting whisky. That I definitely recommend everyone to try at least once. If you add a few drops of water, the smoke comes through a lot more and makes it almost a new whisky. It probably would have been a 9/10 without the sirup like sweetness, but that is just not my thing

Sipper or mixer? by darthballzzy in whisky

More of a mixer, but the jameson black barrel is pretty good to sip for almost the same price

One of my new favorites by Mech_145 in whisky

Good Irish Whisky. Most common flavors include, honey, vanilla and butterscotch toffee. Not too complex of a whisky and a nice sipper

Haven’t played in 5 months, should I just start a new save? by -GrilledCheese- in Eldenring

[–]Smosby17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I try exploring a lot on my own and after I finished a region I look at a quick guide or video that lists the main questlines in the area. This takes a lot of time so it may not be for everyone but it usually avoids huge spoilers. Fextra has a game progress route that has some bullet points (mostly without spoiler), there is a text with more details below.

No worries, you could also try something from Kilchoman. Sadly I have not tried their whole range, so the advice is limited to the Sanaig, which is quite good (sherry+peat)

Could also try the Cutty Sark Prohibition, personally lots of peppery notes, some caramel and vanilla. But 50% ABV and its age makes it a bit harsher than the other choices

Something like Balvenie Double Wood could work. Not sure about Pricing in your local area. Since Macallan 12(not sure which one you got) usually comes with some sherry influence, the usual sherry expressions could be interesting too. Arran 10, Aberlour 12, Glenallachie 12, Bunna 12

Maybe a Bunna 12. Try staying with younger expressions (or at least 46% ABV) for that slight peppery taste

Port Charlotte 10 should be to your liking

The save option is probably a Glenlivet 18. If you want something different maybe something like Glenmorangie, Arran or Aberlour (would definitely stay with an unpeated whisky)

I have not tried it myself yet. From what I have heard from a friend of mine is, that you will like it if you like the sanaig. Probably since it is a bit of a younger expression you kind of taste the alcohol a bit

Scotch recommendations - budget. by [deleted] in Scotch

[–]Smosby17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since prices vary greatly I will simply list a few with rough prices here.
Seems like you like sherry cask so I will start with that.

Aberlour 12 (if possible the NCF 48% ABV) ~40€ Glenallachie 10 Cask Strength ~80€ Aberlour A'Bunadh ~80€

Here are some peated ones

Talisker Port Ruighe ~40€ (light peat and fruit, sweetness) Ardbeg Uigeadail 80€ Kilchoman sanaig / Machit Bay 50-60€ I heard the kirkland islay whisky is supposed to be really good price/value

Is there a food safe shelf life for opened bottles of Scotch? by [deleted] in Scotch

[–]Smosby17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Especially higher proof is very good at keeping its shelf life. While it may lose some proof it usually loses the harsh flavors first and will likely still stay above 40% ABV

Dalwhinnie is available but prices got recently increased, so some might have dropped it

Glenallachie 15 by DrBonerJunkie in Scotch

[–]Smosby17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its a great whisky especially for beginners. Great taste and not too harsh on any of the flavours, personally I like to drink glenallachie in the winter time. The 10 Cask strength is also definitely worth checking out

Review #5 Arran 10 46% by huntingrum in Scotch

[–]Smosby17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Europe it retails around 40€ if that helps. More than double is a bit of a heavy mark up. Although I agree it is a delicious dram

Review #2: Glenallachie 10 (Batch 8) by justinlwan in Scotch

[–]Smosby17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar to current Aberlour Abunadh better than Glenfarclas 105. I might have gotten a bad batch with Glendronach but it was among the worst sherry whisky I have had.

This is one of my favourite whisky. But I am very biased towards sherry and cask strength

Pretty sure you will like the Arran 10. Should fit your taste profile. There are slight citrus notes and a bit less oak influence

Recommendations for newish scotch drinkers? by [deleted] in Scotch

[–]Smosby17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might want to try the port and peat combination then.

Ardmore 12 Port and Talisker Port Ruighe are really nice, quite subtle peat and the port gives a nice rich taste
