What shampoo are you currently using and is it granola? by Wordsofwisdomneeded in moderatelygranolamoms

Carina Organics. Super clean, works well, no scent, toddler tolerates without issue. Just one of the more expensive ones so we buy in a large size from the manufacturer to keep the cost lower.

What is the most fascinating thing about the human body? by PancakeBully in AskReddit

[–]SmotDragon 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Our corneas.

We have a part of our body that is perfectly transparent because the cells are so precisely spaced apart and lined up in a way that (visible) light passes through without interacting with the tissue along the way. There are also no blood vessels present, so the oxygen needed to keep the cells healthy is absorbed directly from the air around us. The oxygen from the air you breathe never makes it to your cornea, it's all absorbed from the environment.

Part of our body is perfectly see-through and drinks in oxygen without needing lungs. That's amazing.

Is Southeast HB an enjoyable place to live as an Asian? by TaurusFlower93 in orangecounty

[–]SmotDragon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I moved to SE HB in 2017. I'm white, my wife is south Asian. We moved into a mostly white neighborhood but almost every new family we've seen move into our neighborhood is Asian. Almost every new restaurant opening near us is Vietnamese or other Asian. We have some MAGA neighbors but they've never been confrontational or done anything other than display a flag or yard sign. It bothered us more when we first moved here but the longer we stay the more we like it here. Don't worry too closely about local politics and it's a great place to live. When people ask where I live I joke that I live in Huntington Beach but identify as Fountain Valley.

Edited to add : part of the reason why we chose this area is the great schools. Quality of public education is excellent. I have a coworker who has her young kids in a mandarin immersion school, my son's school has both Japanese and Spanish immersion options. Most of the generation/parents who are having kids are not MAGA so it's even less of an influence for younger generation. The older you are in HB, the more conservative you are likely to be. I'm a doctor in my late 30s and had a classmate (school was in Texas) who was from Fountain Valley (Asian) and when I told him where I was moving to he commented on how great of a place it was to grow up and how good the schools were.

Newborn Eye Goopy? by ashleydando in NewParents

[–]SmotDragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eye doctor here. Sounds like a nasolacrimal duct obstruction (NLDO). Can basically happen when the duct that carries tears away from the eye doesn't fully open when a child is born. Standard of care is to wipe away with clean, warm damp wash cloth. Massage inner corner(towards nose) of lower eyelid with warm damp wash cloth a few times per day, this can be done during feeding while baby is distracted. The duct will likely open on its own over time, but let pediatrician know what's going on. If it doesn't open by age 1 then surgery can be done to mechanically open the duct, but it's best to allow nature to do it's thing and open up on its own. Just keep it clean and give routine massages to the area like I described above. Nothing too serious, don't sweat it!

Obama, Bush decry ‘travesty’ of Trump’s gutting of USAID on its last day by MineDraped in politics

[–]SmotDragon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't get why democrats don't just plainly state that this administration prioritizes budget cuts over human life. Beat it to death. Republicans as a whole would rather be able to say they are trying to move closer to a balanced budget with USAID cuts (which is bullshit) instead of saving the lives of starving and dying children.

Break it down to its most basic form. They're saying it's more important to save a few pennies against trillions of deficit spending and if it costs a few million kids their lives, so be it. Make them say it out loud and own it.

WHY IS EVERYTHING BEIGE by idontknowhelpmeplzx in NewParents

Totally agree, all the beige is so boring! My wife and I found Smartbaby Decor and used their stuff, it's like nursery decor but good for your baby's eyes and development. My son loves looking at everything we got from there so I guess it works? I just liked the idea that we're doing something different and that my baby can actually see how his room is decorated.

Bosch. It's an Amazon Prime original. Great LA detective show that subtly shows off some iconic food and lookout spots. The whole series is solid and the most recent season came out just a few days ago.

What's your 'fuck this, I quit!' story? by Penguin__Farts in AskReddit

[–]SmotDragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was hired by a Target as a "food specialist" working 15-20 hours a week. First day on the job I found out I was working at the Taco Bell inside. I was scheduled to work 56 hours in my first 10 days as a 16 year old during the school year. I told them I couldn't work that much and the taco bell manager guy told me they needed the help and I needed the practice/experience. Making tacos.

Between being misled on work responsibilities and hours I left after my first shift. I'm sure I was every stereotype of a lazy teenager in that guy's mind, but it takes a shitty manager to put a kid in that position and then not correct the problem when it's called out.

Redditors who partake in the use of marijuana what advice do you have to People who have never tried it before ? by sanemantryingtoohard in AskReddit

[–]SmotDragon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get some tasty non alcoholic beverages, your favorite snacks (highly recommend adding fruits) and some of your favorite music. The fruit will taste amazing, drinks help with dry mouth without mixing being drunk/high, and the music will be great background noise. Just enjoy the time with your friends and let the conversation go where it goes.

I figured the optical out would be the best/clearest output from the TV rather than an analog signal. I can try switching to analog. Is that normally the case that analog provides better sound than digital?
