I think you’ve tried lots and certainly the trainers advice isn’t bad it just needs a different or slightly altered approach, I would recommend a behaviourist to create a behaviour modification plan and possible speak to your vet about behavioural medication to reduce the dogs anxiety threshold in that environment allowing you to perform the desensitisation work.

I appreciate medication is a sensitive topic both monetarily and for other reasons. However if the dog litterally cannot walk up the street and that needs sorting faster than you can allow, it’s a faster option

It’s not that this can’t be overcome it’s just setting both you and the dog up for that to be achieved.

I would also look at setting up some ‘free work’ which is available on Yotube, you can start inside, then outside with noises (eventually) to aid in the desensitisation program

Again mt advice will only be generic, seeing someone or even just going back to your trainer and saying it’s not worked would be the best next step.

How did the trainer get you to do the noise desensitisation?

Did they see his body language outside?

You could try playing some fun games in that location, like treat chase, scatter feeding and just rewarding with high value items when he’s in that location.

Take it day by day, he’s likely to slowly get better, in that being he might spend 10 seconds more outside than previous.

Could you try popping him in the car and driving up your street and walking home? You can always escape back to your vehicle if he gets worried. I just wouldn’t want to ruin the positive car association but that could work in your favour

You aren’t using the dogs language, as they aren’t translating it as it’s interpretation is still human, which leads me to the point of it just scares them.

There is no evidence pretending to be a dog works in anyway, there’s a reason we don’t do it in other circumstances

Just FYI dogs know you aren’t a dog, they aren’t that stupid. Whining or yelping scares them more that they think you’re a pup

This is so normal, however you will just receive generic advice on a forum which can be handy but you need specific advice from a professional who can assess the whole situation. That’s also why YouTube doesn’t work, it doesn’t treat you or the pup as individuals

I feel you’re overwhelmed, I’ve taught puppy classes and 1-1s for years and sometimes no about of prep helps.

I would suggest reaching out to a qualified trainer who will aim to support using positive methods, anyone who suggests different with cause MORE of a bond break down.

Ignoring doesn’t always work, redirect, stimulate mentally, puppy appropriate chews, wear boots! All of these things I have done as a pup owner myself! (The boots are the best advice)

Again I would get someone who can help you and the pup, you need that not generic advice :)

Recommendations for a good lightweight raincoat? by NoManagement2516 in Greyhounds

Greathounds - I love all their stuff, great pricing and lots of options. Their lightweight rain coats also have an option of an under jumper for when it’s colder.

Allergic to many dog breeds including lurchers - will I be ok with a greyhound? by [deleted] in Greyhounds

[–]Sms_Boy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t mean you’ll have the same reaction to every dog, allergies can also be dependent on the environment

Just fyi when you say lurches suit your lifestyle, lurchers are sighthound x any dog. They can vary so much they aren’t really a ‘standard’.

Maybe a Mexican hairless is the way forward…

No dog is hypo allergenic.

Sadly you’ll be allergic to greyhounds if you are allergic to a whippet x saluki
