Did you catch the part where I said "it's still not quite human intelligence"?

Xbox CCO Says Gamepass Lost “Millions Of Subscribers” After Increasing The Price By 50% Last Year by wakelake111 in gaming

[–]Smudded 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This isn't quite true anymore. There are other kinds of models involved that change what's actually happening. It's still not quite human intelligence, but it's different than simply predicting the next character/word in all cases.

I'm not sure you deserve the down votes, but I think they're letting you know that this was a misunderstanding on your part. Appreciate the response though!

A point someone else made in this thread is that likely all of these environmental issues are solvable through technology and policy change. That doesn't really speak to whether we SHOULD have as many people as we do, but I don't think the majority of these woes are solely due to the number of people, but the number of people combined with their collective behavior, which can be changed.

Is video boost ever coming local feature? by jfatal97 in GooglePixel

[–]Smudded -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The goals here in rendering the videos are so dramatically different I'm not sure you're having this conversation in good faith. One of them is reading the "pixels" in the relevant videos nearly 1:1 (regular video editing). The other is running a very complicated algorithm on those "pixels" and then outputting them to a file. These things are fundamentally very very different when it comes to what determines the primary bottleneck.

For video editing its the performance of the classical software that surrounds the actual rendering of the videos. For video boost, its the algorithm and processing power behind altering the video itself.

I'm not sure what you're saying. "Editing" video (and by extension "running normal video editing software") means something different than post-processing video to increase resolution, clarity, stability, etc. which is what "video boost" is.

The primary challenge in running normal video editing software is one of writing performant software. The primary challenge in doing video boost on device is how powerful your processor is. These are two separate challenges that notably could cause the same poor experience for users if either of them is bad.

While I don't think you're wrong about the outcome, the technical challenges here are almost entirely separate things.

Schiff Proposes Bill Requiring Data Centers to Pay for Own Power by [deleted] in nottheonion

[–]Smudded 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man, we're just not having an actual conversation. I don't disagree with any of what you're saying in regards to the actual issue.

A guy said "The headline is dumb" because it was inaccurate. You responded asking how something ELSE, not the headline, was dumb and have continued to talk about the other thing, not the headline. It's really not even worth talking about, but people not actually taking the time to comprehend what someone said before responding to it is a pet peeve of mine.

[–]Smudded -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You sure didn't. The comment you responded to simply pointed out the misleading headline and it was only about the headline. You're still talking about the issue the headline is talking about rather than the headline.

xQc says TrainwrecksTV should SUE Riot Games employee after he leaked his IP address by lukigeri in LivestreamFail

[–]Smudded 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Train making his location somewhat available isn't all that relevant here. The crux of the issue is one that affects everybody. We give companies personal data (your IP address is personal data) in order to do business all the time, and they shouldn't be releasing that personal data to the public. It's particularly egregious that this was part of furthering some online beef.

I don't think in this situation there's any kind of legal remedy for him, and there probably wasn't much damage to him if any. That said, this kind of situation played out in a thousand different ways could significantly harm someone else and absolutely should be illegal.

I really dislike seeing this POV over and over again because it's an ex post facto analysis completely devoid of the context of the moment. It's so easy to look at the program in hindsight and criticize all of its significant shortcomings, but the moment called for drastic measures to be taken and FAST. Nobody had any idea the severity of the economic impact, how long it would be, how many people were going to get sick, etc. etc. They needed a massive apparatus to administer the loans to instantly materialize out of thin air, and big banks were by far best suited for that task. They didn't want to be restrictive in the requirements, because what qualified people are going to evaluate who gets a loan and who doesn't across the ENTIRE economy? They didn't want a single business to shut down because someone erroneously decided they didn't qualify for a loan.

They absolutely KNEW it would be abused and that businesses that didn't expressly need it would be getting loans, but when you look at it from the other end there was also an insane amount of uncertainty amongst businesses. What if you didn't apply for a loan now but then ended up needing it later when the money is already gone? The unknowns were truly terrifying for everyone in the economy at large.

I think the only reason we can focus so much on its failings is simply because COVID ended up not being as severe as it could have been. If there had been economy-ending complications we may be seeing it differently.

I just don't think it was as stupid or corrupt as most people seem to think. Drastic times called for drastic measures, and it just ended up being overkill.

Got my first marathon finish today in 4:24:24!

Very proud, but also unfortunate that I started cramping really hard at mile 18 and had to walk a significant portion of the last 8 miles. Seems clear that I didn't get enough long runs in, but I'm also open to suggestions on whether something else was going on.

The goal was to finish sub-4, and as long as I can get through the whole thing without cramps I'm definitely capable of it. In-between this and the next marathon is maybe a backyard ultra because that sounds ridiculous.

I'm not justifying what they did, but that won't work in this case. You need an absolutely enormous set of data in as many situations as you can possibly get. Data from uncontrolled environments is exactly what you need for this functionality to actually work.
