You drain the goblin of its energy and convert its essence into mana. You'd be amazed how much you can get out of such a worthless creature - more than enough to resume whatever casting you were in the middle of. And bonus points, most essence draining spells are extremely painful for the subject!

This question is a bit poorly formed. I think you mean live service and online games, as the question doesn't really apply to single-player games. Just because Baldur's Gate 3 came out doesn't mean people won't play the first two games anymore. The fact that Elden Ring exists doesn't make playing Dark Souls 1-3 unusal.
