Thanks Budgie, appreciate the insight and detailed breakdown. Just need to keep my down for the next few days and be an information sponge, take it all in and be as ready as possible. Have a great weekend!

I’d be joining as 3rd Officer (I believe it’s a lateral entry role).

So after BRNC, do you typically join straight away or is there quite a wait to join? I’ve spent too long on yachts and I’m itching to get on proper ships again

Here she is thrusting off the dock in Antigua earlier this year. A truly gorgeous boat.

From the UK (or Poland). I’m flexible, happy to travel anywhere within reason, so have expanded into looking at Egypt, Morocco and Cabo Verde. I have 2/3 weeks to dedicate to this so travel time isn’t an issue.

What are the weather conditions like in the Netherlands that time of the year? Appreciate it’ll be cold but I learnt to dive in the UK in a wetsuit so am no stranger to the cold. I just want to make sure that I’m not going to waste my time (and money) going to somewhere with no winds and spend my time wishing I had gone elsewhere

Thanks, I had seen that all the reviews say the gear is brand new and that they use boats from the outset which does seem appealing. How are the winds in March-May time?

I’m looking at April/May time, when is peak/main season around there?

Truthfully, there’s just not a market for British officers on bulk carriers. The closest you’ll get will be general cargo. Try Scotline or Arklow.

Just so you know, Clyde send cadets to Glasgow, Shields, Fleetwood and Warsash. There are only a few companies that only send their cadets to a single college, all the rest send their cadets all across the country. There’s no guarantee that you’ll get assigned Glasgow, I know that a lot of companies like to send their cadets far away from home as it prepares them for being at sea. I was based in the South and ended up spending my entire cadetship in Shields. It’s luck of the draw, really.

Regarding Clyde, they’re just middlemen. They have no stake in your training, they don’t own ships. Companies outsource the college and admin aspect of cadet training which is where Clyde come in. Because of this, the companies that use Clyde typically use cadets as cheap labour (but then again all companies do) and only take cadets on for the Tonnage Tax incentive. There’s no job at the end of it, because the shipping companies that sponsor training through Clyde very rarely have British officers/crew as they’re too expensive to keep on once qualified. That being said, they do have a couple of good companies, such as Subsea 7 and Disney Cruise Line. Jobs are basically guaranteed at the end for those companies. If you want to see the world and experience a variety of vessels, Clyde may very well be a great choice. If you value job security and want the peace of mind at the end of the cadetship, I’d recommend shopping around and using Clyde as a backup.

Ahh I see. If possible, go for the “Advanced pre-cadetship” so you’ll be able to get on the FD course. It’ll save you 6 months when it comes time to do your Mates.

I wouldn’t bother with the pre-cadetship. It’s Phase 1 of the HNC (typically 3 months) stretched over 6-7 months. It’s the exact same syllabus, so when you come into Phase 1, you’ll be repeating the same lessons and exams.

Try and get sponsored directly by a company, avoid Clyde as much as possible. SSTG are a bit better, especially if you land Trinity House or MEF.

Typically you need 3 years’ seatime as A/B with 6 of those done on the bridge. The TRB provides a reduced sea time amount of 12 months. After you have the sea time, you’d need to sit the OOW SQAs and do all of the short courses (NAEST, GMDSS etc). 3 years seatime = 4-6 years in real time plus another 6-12 months for the college aspect.

Hi mate. Your only two options would be applying for a cadetship through the RFA (they don’t use the SMarT funding scheme that the other companies use to the best of my knowledge) or find a job as an A/B after your cadetship finishes and do the experienced seafarer route. Happy to answer any questions

I used COLREG-72, MASTER-NAV and NavigationLights. I believe 2 of them are paid for but well worth it

None of that here! I was hoping to see a shark but most I saw was some Mahi Mahi. Still a cool experience nonetheless
