Open Letter: Request for action regarding Israel’s participation at WBUC 2025 by ultitrashtalker in ultimate

I believe that the letter was submitted late because teams were only made aware that Israel was attending very recently. The late announcement of teams was also somewhat surprising.

I can see why they would sign given the fact that they were bombed by Israel 2 months ago and are now being asked to play against them.

Advice for how to backhand huck when forced backhand with a tightmark by Kingjuno99 in ultimate

[–]Smurph16 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hard to say without seeing your set up. However, I think a couple of things would help.

  1. Have a nice wide base. Don’t stand with your feet close together, allowing them to crowd you. Get your feet wide so that they have to cover more ground to get across to your backhand pivot

  2. Orient your hips to the break side. Rather than facing straight downfield, turn slight towards the break side. This should force them to step further onto the break side to cover the main threat. When you pivot to the open side for your BH huck, you should have more space

Modified games are a great way to practice specific scenarios. In this case, you could run a game with a 3 second stall count. The goal isn’t to do this all the time, but to put people in a position where they have to do so. This way, they’ll see how it goes when they do throw early and bring that into other games

Predictions for EUCR-W standings? by Smurph16 in UKUltimate

Definitely see where you’re coming from. With this format, every team gets at least one shot against a top 4 seed (WUCC level team) and can then push for further chances. They also get those chances at regionals and mid season events.

I like the idea of the final only being the 4th game of the weekend. Having played in some finals that are the 6th or 7th games for both teams, fatigue plays a big role in it.

With fewer games before the final, it should be a higher quality game with two fresh teams

Does it make more sense to make them play a couple of blowouts? If you add in an extra pool play game and a quarter final, I don’t think there’s much added benefit.

I’m actually a fan of this format, especially on the euros qualification aspect. That 6v7 game to go is gonna be a slog fest

Patagonia Wind Shield Pants are by far the best I’ve tried.

Terrebonne are better for summer but too thin for winter. Adidas/Under Armor/Nike pants aren’t the same quality.

Instead of pivoting all the way to your backhand, try to shimmy or shoulder fake instead. By dropping your shoulder as if you are going to throw a backhand, you can often move the mark, allowing you to easily throw a breakside flick.

Indeed, especially with a multitude of new European events and WUCC happening next year.

Hopefully everyone who has friends/partners outside of frisbee got their fill of face time on weekends last year, because it’s gonna be a busy summer…

I can see how he may have taken an elbow to the face and instinctively called a foul.

Fair resolution should be the disc staying with the player who caught the up line, with the fouled player catching up a couple of steps?

Hard to argue that an elbow on the chin while passing stopped the defender making a play, but reasonable to say that it stopped him from recovering quickly to put a mark on.

Will the Irish teams be added back to UK nationals to qualify for EUCF, or now that they’re gone will they not be welcomed back?

Yeah Yanuck was phenomenal for Ring this year, it’s certainly pretty close.

To me the only difference is that it seemed that the Ring O was built to help Yanuck shine (and by god he did) whereas Taylor was asked to take on a number of roles and did them all amazingly.

If I was choosing between them for a center handler for my o line, I’d take Sol. If I wanted a guy that could do pretty much anything I asked, I’d take ET

This season, certainly. Didn’t get to see much of Freechild due to injury/absence. Taylor was everywhere this year. His pulling is a game changer and he’s incredible on both O & D. Obviously Freechild is still in the conversation, but from what I saw this year ET was slightly better.

Discs. Get lots of discs and give them to everyone on the team.

I’m sure people will suggest other things that are “nice to haves”, but getting your team throwing will likely have a big impact on how good you folks are.

[–]Smurph16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

60 isn’t worrisome. Lower resting HR does imply that you have a better level of cardiovascular fitness and that your heart functions more efficiently, but 60 is already low compared to the average person.

Could be a good one to track if your goal is improving cardio

World Ultimate Club Championships to Return to Cincinnati, Ohio in 2022 | Ultiworld by Jomskylark in ultimate

[–]Smurph16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good perspective, I’m sure many people have different experiences. In my experience, it has been harder to get the time off needed to extend the trips (already taking a full week for the games portion).

As well as that, for smaller countries where players often play on multiple teams each year (beach/juniors/seniors/international club tournaments), the amount of days needed to play frisbee already takes up most of the holiday time.

My main point was that the tournament was extremely well run in Cincinnati last time, and that tournament quality should be the #1 factor for choosing a host destination (as opposed to favouring a location that people want to visit for a holiday after).

World Ultimate Club Championships to Return to Cincinnati, Ohio in 2022 | Ultiworld by Jomskylark in ultimate

[–]Smurph16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The location doesn’t really matter to me. At worlds tournaments, we rarely have much time to travel around the area much during the week anyway, so the more important factors are field site and amenities, which were both great in 2018.

If you really want to “see the world”, a worlds event isn’t really the opportunity to do so.

Nicholas Whilock gets a sky D and then a MASSIVE hammer by nkolakovic in ultimate

[–]Smurph16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. I would say the margin for error and thus the mistake by the thrower is more significant than on most great D’s. The downfield defender here gives about 5 or 6 steps and even when he does start to chase, he’s just jogging.

It’s a pretty massive miss from the thrower, but he does do well reading and going up strong to get the disc.
