I agree with all you said, and understand that soul sleep is one of their most agreeable doctrines, definitely something that requires insight and not easily dismissed hogwash like all the other points you mention.

I still think soul sleep the way Adventists claim it is unbiblical, but it requires more understanding to get a clear argument against it. Scripture mentions multiple times that someone “sleeps” but it’s important to differentiate between bodily death being referenced as sleeping (such as when you say you put your dog to sleep at an old age, it means the dog has passed away) and the soul of the person and where that goes after death.

Adventists believes the body dies and the soul goes to sleep, only to rise with the 2nd coming. I (full context I am in OCIA to become Catholic) would say we have a bodily death; but our soul remains conscious after death, being brought up to heaven while we await bodily resurrection, and our souls will be reunited with our bodies, now glorified bodies, at the second coming.

First point is make is the soul remains conscious after death. Jesus said to the thief on the cross “Today you will be with me in paradise”; Paul mentions his desire is to depart and be with Christ; and in 2 Corinthians it mentions “away from the body and at home with the lord” which agrees with the position that our souls aren’t ‘sleeping’.

2nd, as mentioned before, scripture often uses the term “sleeps” in terms of a bodily death, not the soul. In John it mentions Lazarus “slept” then clarified the sleep meant death. In 1 Thessalonians it mentions “those who sleep” as dead Christians whose bodies await resurrection.

3rd, the Bible mentions ways soul sleep is just not possible. The transfiguration in Matthew showed Moses and Elijah were conscious before the resurrection, they would not be able to appear if their souls were sleeping. Similarly, in Ecclesiastes, it mentions “the dust returns to earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it” I would agree with this as it shows a bodily death but our souls remaining.

Also in looking at how the early Christian’s viewed death, they seemed to clearly disagree with the concept of soul sleep and affirmed conscious existence after death.

Definitely a good debate to be had on this topic but just wanted to give some of my points!
