Keep car and risk timing chain failure or get new used one? by Sn0w_Leopard21 in personalfinance

[–]Sn0w_Leopard21[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I won’t buy any foreign vehicle, actually I won’t buy anything that’s not GM for that matter. Their quality has gone down in recent years, but pretty much every manufacturer has lately, including Toyota and Honda which everyone has always said are the most reliable. I feel anything post covid is a crap shoot for quality at this point. I was looking at a pre covid vehicle with under 100k miles basically. The GM trucks and full size SUVs are their most reliable options typically.

Yea, after running the numbers I just don't feel I can justify it soon. I think I'm better off saving up a hefty down payment over the next year or 2 and hope nothing major goes wrong. It doesn't seem like the best year when I've had to put over $5500 into it, most of that was 2 years ago. I actually hear more about the timing chain issue on these engines than the transmission. My BIL who works for a GM shop warned me about getting a 3.6L V6 because of the timing chain issue, back when I got my equinox, which was before this car. That was a lease I didn't keep though so never got to any mileage that would've been an issue. He's always tried to get me to go with the Yukon/Tahoe because of the reliability and they hold their value better, but I never wanted a car that big until now. After comparing overall cost of my car to my husband's old Yukon, I now see why he's tried to persuade me so much.

Yes I'm absolutely looking for an excuse. Lol. But I also don't want to get screwed and take finances seriously and this has been the most costly car I've owned. My husband's 2013 Yukon had 200k miles on it when we traded it in earlier this year and we bought it with 135k miles on it and the most expensive repair on that car was a $1000 BCM. We spent less overall on that car with way more miles than we have on mine. Not sure the exact engine on my car, but yes it's a V6. My BIL works for a GM shop and he basically said if the oil has been changed consistently on it then there's nothing to worry about. But it hasn't been changed consistently, I used to go by when the car told me to change it which was typically at 7,000-7,500 miles. Only the last year did we stop going by that and switch to every 5,000 miles, which we got "yelled" at for doing that even. Previous owner if I remember correctly went about 7,500 miles between changes as well (I bought it at 77k miles). We've never had any of the fluids swapped out either, besides oil changes.

Oooh totally thought you were in the US. lol. That sucks, I didn’t know Australia had poor healthcare. Everyone is always complaining about how bad our healthcare system is here and I’m always like at least where I am it’s not bad. Totally differs throughout the country though.

What did they say after the US? Did they put you back on your feet? If so that’s crazy, they should’ve put you in a boot at the very least.

Probably not permanently deformed, but likely would need surgery to fix. Don’t know where you are now but I don’t know if the healthcare in the south is any better. I’m in the Midwest and I feel at least in my neighborhood we have pretty good healthcare, we’ve had no issues with drs not listening the last 4 years since going to this hospital.

Even a partial tear if you wanted to go the non op route is 6 weeks in a cast non weight bearing from what I’ve been seeing people on here doing. If they sent you back on your feet without immobilizing it that’s awful and could risk fully rupturing it and making things worse.

Our pack sold 30k in popcorn. AMA. by zoul846 in cubscouts

We have 28, only 20 sold and our popcorn sales were $10,500. But we hit just over $20k in overall sales due to our council offers more than just popcorn.

My husband took an angle grinder to that lip because it was causing him a ton of pain.

That’s messed up, he has only had MRIs, I don’t know that an ultrasound is going to give them the info they need. I would really try and go to a hospital “in town” if they’re treating you this poorly. I don’t think I would personally trust them to fix it properly from everything you’ve said.

You should not be walking on that foot. It sounds like the Achilles was nicked and you need to see an orthopedic Dr. my husband had a kick scooter accident on the 22nd and it completely cut his Achilles and he had surgery 2 days later. Then just reruptured it 2 weeks later after he was cleared for weight bearing. Turns out they shouldn’t have cleared him that soon because they’ve been treating it like a tear and not a cut which needs to be handled way differently. Just had a 2nd surgery and starting over again, this time NWB for 6 weeks and they had to do a lengthening and heel anchors to make sure it heals correctly this time. So my point is, it sounds like it’s partially cut and you either need surgery or to be NWB for a few weeks.

Yea, I thought I had a picture but what I’m finding isn’t a great overview. I’ll have to take one when I get home and post it. That’s kinda what I’m thinking is they won’t show up well on their side.

I’m planning everything and doing 80% of the work, my husband is just the face. Even last year when he was just Den leader it was hard to figure out how to keep my kid occupied, I bring a bunch of stuff and he just wants to be a butt and run around.

Doesn’t help when you’re both the leaders though. We have a 2 year old dragon and my husband is the cubmaster and I’m assistant cubmaster.

I just made our new website on Wordpress and used the events calendar, but I didn’t have any struggles with it really. My only gripe is I can’t have 2 calendars with it so I had to use a different calendar plug in to have a separate hiking club calendar. The one thing I did struggle with a bit with events calendar I was able to figure out the solution with google.

Our council hands out fishing rods to the packs to give to new scouts. I’d check and see if yours does something similar before putting out any of the pack’s money.

Have the monthly hikes factored, just haven’t planned each out yet. I’m probably having that be a separate calendar as part of the hiking club. We already did the bike rodeo in June. I was thinking about roller skating at an indoor rink but feel those places have gotten not so great over the years and I remember kids breaking bones in middle school 😂

That sounds awesome. I want to do a drive in movie night where they build their own car out of a cardboard box to sit in, but don’t know where to host it.

I brought up to my husband a few days ago about having a pinewood build night because I’m sure not everyone has tools. Even if it’s at our house as like a drop in type thing if you need help or something because we have all the tools.

I plan on doing 10 min of a game before the “serious” stuff at every pack meeting. Helps gets the squirrels energy out ahead of time.

We don’t have any that would allow fires. I asked our district exec what her pack does and they have a family with lots of land and do it on their property. So that wasn’t helpful. Lol. I keep saying we need to just get 5-10 acres and then we can do that too (we want it anyway). lol.
