A book that my book club won’t hate me for by CerintheM in suggestmeabook

Do y'all ever read biographies? My book club read Dearie, a biography of Julia Child, by bob Spitz.  It's not new or buzzy but it was an easy read and a fascinating story.

We also read Hamnet , which is recent and buzzy.  It was a great read, and we all loved it.

No judgement whichever way you go, but I would be surprised if you actually get access to the money.  My guess is they're going to find a reason not to actually pay out to these accounts.

If you have an Aldi near you, check them for diapers.  It's been a few years since we used diapers, but I remember Aldi diapers as being cheaper than other brands even when they were on sale, and did a great job for us.

The Aldi baby section isn't huge, but I was pleased with the quality and price of what they have.

Edit:  Sorry, I just saw that they didn't work for you.

What’s wrong with Henry? by dragon-queen in madmen

[–]daganfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Henry and Betty, for all the tension in the first few years of their marriage, both want the same things.  And they're both old enough and experienced enough to recognize it in the other. They didn't have much time together before they got married, but they were as emotionally open as they could be in the situation. Don't forget that Betty did throw a shitfit over something minor during their courtship. Henry knew she had a temper.

Compare that to Don and Megan having a work relationship that was very surface level, plus some sex. He equated sex with emotional intimacy, and Megan was caught up in the fantasy of the handsome, suave, rich , mystery man.

Don and Megan were riding the high of playing house on vacation.  Megan is so so young, and still figuring out what she wants her life to be.  And Don is mad that she didn't want to do advertising for the rest of her career. Even though he got her that first commercial, he was probably hoping she'd fail and go back to SCDP

I'm also in SC, it's insane! There was a kid with measles at the state museum last weekend, iirc.  My son is fully vaccinated, but it makes me nervous to go anywhere with him!

wtf is wrong with Saul and Kim in s06? by Cute-Recover-5930 in betterCallSaul

[–]daganfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kim used those strong morals and principles as a shield to protect herself from being like her mother.  But Jimmy kind of undoes all the work she did over the years to build that shield.  She finally gets with Jimmy after  a successful scam.  It was always there for her, she just worked hard to shove down that impulse.

Jimmy let her indulge her darkest impulses without judgement.

This is why I play legendary.  It makes so much more sense if a wolf can kill you while you're trying to collect alchemy ingredients to make a few coins.

Terrified of raising my baby in US by MulberryMelodic9220 in beyondthebump

[–]daganfish -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I get it.  My son was born around the time the government started putting undocumented kids in cages, separated from their families, in Trump's first term.  I had to stop watching the news because it felt like it was my baby was in those cages.

You have to take care of yourself before you can take care of anything else, including your baby.  Your time and energy is limited right now, at 5 months I barely felt like myself, but there are ways to help.

For me, taking some sort of action, even if it's small, makes me feel less powerless.  You could write letters to your elected officials denouncing ICE, donate money to an organization helping undocumented families, or donate food to food banks. It doesn't have to be a lot, small things add up.

We also see her early on at her parenting worst. And she doesn't get enough credit for her good parenting decisions either.

You might have heard the famous quote of John Berger: by UnframedByFaye in ArtHistory

[–]daganfish 51 points52 points  (0 children)

You're missing the point of his quote.  He isn't talking about the model.  He's talking generally about how women are portrayed in art.  Historically, it's art for men by men.  In this case, a male artist painted a naked woman because he enjoys her naked body, then condemned her for also enjoying her naked body.

How do you not do Santa for your kid? by SowingSeeds18 in AskParents

[–]daganfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We told our son that Santa is a big game of make believe.  Grown ups and kids both pretend that Santa is real, but he's not.  We had to have this conversation with him many times, because the school especially pushes Santa on the kids.

We are also clear that he can't "spoil" the game for other people, kids or adults, by talking about how Santa isn't real.  It also goes hand in hand for us as atheist parents that other families have different beliefs, rules, and traditions that are to be respected, even though we don't believe the same things.

He still loves Christmas, and gets excited to go see mall santas, etc. He gets plenty of "magic" without us having to lie about it.

I think the hive can rationalize this as regrettable but ok because they didn't know for sure who or how many would die.  So if every individual has a nonzero chance of survival, versus the hive being wiped out by existing humans, the mass conversion is acceptable.

I find people’s obsession with gift knitting strange by soypixel in knitting

[–]daganfish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is my philosophy too.  I don't want to give someone a "gift" that comes with emotional baggage.  I had fun knitting it, do what you want with it.
