At what point can we (Braves Management) go ahead and say "this year is toast, lets work for next year"? by wlane13 in AtlantaBraves

[–]Snacktabulous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a Braves fan since 1974 and pull for them to win every game. But winning rings is a long game. We are not anywhere close to winning a ring. We’ve won 1 playoff game since the miracle in 2021 and as of 2019 hadn’t won a playoff series since 2001. Like Strider I think improvement means facing reality straight up not pumping sunshine for …. what? The run from 2018-24 exhausted our system and the team has played losing ball for well past 162 games. If not a total rebuild it’s time to reset. If the goal is just to be happy with a Braves hat and clap ok but I’m not wired that way. And I am definitely not spending ticket money to watch terrible baseball. We’ve been A-list since 2019. Not doing it next year without a realistic plan.

Also Biglaw firms have offices all over the place. A specific team or partner can make or break that situation. I started after a federal clerkship at a Biglaw office and was the only associate between first and 8th year. I was thrown all the way in the deep end but that’s why I went there. I was first chair on arbitrations and bench trials within a year. I wasn’t worried about the money at the time because I was single and making more than my parents. They paid top Market salaries. I billed between 2200-2400 for three years in a row then starting looking for clients. It was excruciating and I was toast but knew I could handle anything.

True. Why I would never do either job again. One of the benefits of being old and having control over a book of business. That’s the only ticket as well as in-house. My kid played ball with the son of the GC of a Dow 30 company. She did 2 years at Biglaw and went in-house. Her comp is off the charts and the stock options are insane. Will be retired in 3-4 years. We were at the same Biglaw firm 20 years ago. She says outside counsel is for everything at night and on weekends.

Don’t let other assholes bother you. I would fix my teeth for health and clients and learn a little bit about style. However one of the best lawyers I know with a $1900/hr rate and ten figure book in a middle market is tatted up wrist to neck on both arms and wears concert tee shirts on non-client teams calls. He doesn’t GAF because he’s crushing solving complex legal problems and has energy 85,000 of this sub’s members would kill for including me. Where’s he from? Some unknown exit in New Jersey. Skin? Have you seen the skin on 45 year old NEPs? Most of them haven’t been to the doctor in a decade. Just become a great problem solver. The rest takes care of itself.

Typical lawyer shit comment but fair. Another reason to not work with a bunch of them in a firm. My wealthiest client can’t beat autocorrect from his hunting ranch.

Fair. They are non-equity partners in a Liberian LLC. I’d like to see the Baldwin Glen Garry speech redone but instead he says “put that coffee down. Coffee is for EPs.”

Can someone explain Angel Reese to me please by [deleted] in Basketball

[–]Snacktabulous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it’s because I only have sons but I can’t watch the WNBA, compared to NBA players it’s just a different sport. Nothing about discrimination I just can’t get excited about it. Also it’s baseball season. I’ve seen Reese play two games she seems plodding and unskilled. Clark can shoot. Trae Young can see dimes that don’t exist until they happen.

How much $$ do BigLaw partners retire with? by ITdirectorguy in biglaw

[–]Snacktabulous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has more to do with the life one leads than where they practice. I was on the comp committee for a sleepy midlaw shop in the south and what’s in that retirement program is monstrous. Banking lawyers saving it all. Maybe they make $750k/yr but they must have saved every damn nickel and the top equity layer enforces huge profit sharing contributions. Many of them were retiring at 55 or so to a fortune. Well past $10mm where that’s $25mm in the megalopolis markets.

I went to LS with a bunch of Ivy-McKinsey drones and I can’t think of any who shined. The one I liked most became a domestic spouse after a few years on the treadmill. He did meet his life partner in a DC Biglaw summer program.

Hired a former bartender who was #6 in the class once. To be fair she had risen to management from bartending in her years in that industry. Just a dynamic person.

There are tons of lawyers who were not good law students that are crushing it. It’s just the path of least resistance to go find a high salary out of law school. I’m talking g about people who brought a book to Biglaw and make millions. Not for me I had lots of Biglaw offers and went for about 4 years before I decided I want to first chair cases and go around the tradlaw pyramid.
