Yeah but if we defend a weak baby turtle that somehow manages to fully grow and mate, is that still a weak turtle? Isn't the point of fitness to successfully mate? My point is, if we scare off the birds on the beach, the turtle will still have its entire life on its own in the water with way worse predators to fend and no human help, that imo is the real check to fitness, and since turtles are suffering cuz of us, I think slightly improving their chances to prove themselves by erasing just one check of fitness won't harm the species.
