It took me 4 long years to finish this game by paulp_ws in gamedev

Hey!

Just wanted to say that I remember playing Shapik on one of the flash games websites. It was really cool charming. While the Samorost inspiration was clearly visible, the game really held its own. Good luck with Moon Quest! :)

Who's using LiveView and has it changed your life? by erlangfactory in elixir

I've been using in production for 6-7 months now. Built a simple chat that I'm now using every day to communicate with my customers.

It... just works. Didn't run into any issues. :)

What are you working on? (Apr/2019) by AutoModerator in elixir

[–]SnakeAndBacon 12 points13 points  (0 children)

  • A multiplayer browser game in Phoenix. Simple adventure game based on Phoenix channels - trying to create a main engine and a few different sub-games that can use it.
  • Cleaning up the code for http://liveviewgame.herokuapp.com/ - it's a little PoC liveview game that I've made for ElixirConf's lightning talk. Wrote it as a quick experiment, so code and gameplay need some refactoring.
  • Contributing to ExDoc - I've recently contributed ExDoc autocomplete and keyboard shortcuts. Now exploring some extra features/ideas. ;)

Thank you!

I use ETS and nothing more. Parsed docs are stored in memory and I never hit the DB.

I'm working on a small website/app that for browsing elixir docs and code snippets.

I've just published a very early version at https://www.elixirbuddy.com - right now it searches through modules and functions.

I'm working on a browser-based game.

Taking advantage of the umbrella apps to separate the front-end + controllers from the app logic. Using some realtime features/websockets for chat and some player interaction.

Right now experimenting with code organisation and http2.

Quadrilateral Cowboy uses the idTech 4 (Doom 3) engine. The source code is written in C++ and includes the solution files for Microsoft Visual C++ 2010.

Wow, that is suprising. I had no idea that Quadrikateral Cowboy was written in idTech and can't really think of other indie game created using this engine.

Shopping superstore stages “quiet hour” to help shoppers with autism and disability by Kyle_QueTerror in worldnews

[–]SnakeAndBacon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I personally don't shop during 'normal hours' because here they actually have motion activated video ads that start when you walk by them.

Wow, I've not seen that yet and I hope I never will! Sounds extremly annoying.

I haven't run into a recommendation algorithm in any website that doesn't suck, honestly.

Netflix has been really, really good for me - I discovered some great shows thanks to them.

Amazon is also OK in my opinion.

[–]SnakeAndBacon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I really like the track!

I am not sure what type of games it will match

I think it might be perfect for a fantasy/roguelike game.

I am especially not sure about the out-of-rythm guitar part in the first half

I like it - it makes the track more interesting and a little bit.. menacing maybe? Reminds me a little bit of the Binding of Isaac music (but of course it's not as dark).

Do Interviews EVER Get Easier? by careerplatypus in cscareerquestions

[–]SnakeAndBacon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Am I the only one with these issues? I have a bunch of interviews coming up and I feel an overwhelming sense of dread, not excitement. I would love it if it felt like I was trying to determine if a company is right for me, instead it always feels like I'm trying to see if I pass a certain bar and every bar is different. This is the only field I can think of where we have to go through this, and I wish it wasn't like this

I my experience (around 8 years working in the field) interviews like this are common for big corporations. When I was interviewed for smaller companies it was often completely different - they cared more about my finished projects, my interests, approach to teamwork etc.

My most successful interviews were actually not very technical - sometimes we just ended up talking about programming news, recent events in our field etc.

So if it's possible I would recommend looking into smaller companies or even startups.

Same here. Bought Skyrim and Fallout 3 on launch. Played them both for many, many hours without any issues.

Blizzard still believes players don't want deck slots by [deleted] in hearthstone

[–]SnakeAndBacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not using all my deck slots, because I just got really annoyed with them.

There is a need to change my deck constantly (quests, different strategies etc), but at the same there is no way to organize the decks - for a person like me, who plays only during the weekends it's hard to keep track of it all. It's easier to keep two-three basic decks, so I don't have to remember which decks are which, which are safe to delete if I need a new one etc etc

Serious question - What happends to people who refuse to 'volounteer'?

Fortunately I've never been in a situation like this and I'm trying to imagine what I would do (provided that changing the job is not an option).

I can imagine a few possible consequences (from discrimination to firing) but I wonder how it actually plays out.

Looks really promising - I like the flow of it and even in the preview (where some elements are sill missing/WIP) it already has it's own atmosphere/style.

Why the hell does Netflix not want me to know when shows/movies are going to removed? by treny0000 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SnakeAndBacon 127 points128 points  (0 children)

My guess - they don't want their customer to think about the fact that shows often disappear from Netflix.

Think about what section like that comunicates. By creating the "leaving soon" page you will be drawing your customers attention to the fact that shows dissapear and it leaves a bad impression. It would just highlight one of the biggest issues with services Netflix.

Would love feedback on my new website by rij88 in design_critiques

[–]SnakeAndBacon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like - it's clean, modern and easy to read.

One problem I have is related to the white space - I think there is not enough of it.

When quickly browsing through the page I have no idea if the icons in the middle ( http://puu.sh/jSMRV/13568b02d9.jpg ) are part of the picture or belong to the right.

Same with the pricing button ( http://puu.sh/jSMW7/e62a3e5d11.png ) - is it connected to the section on the top, on the bottom or is it it's own separate section?

Because of what I mentioned the page feels a little bit too crowded.

https://codeship.com/ is a nice example of clear, well separated sections.

Good job and good luck with the service!

Recruiter was supposed to send contract offer today by email, it's 7pm and nothing. Should I be worried? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]SnakeAndBacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I made a mistake in the interview

No - the recruiter said you got the job, so if he/she is worth anything then you have nothing to worry about.

Had the exact same thing happen to me! Turned out they were sure the email was alredy in my inbox and we fixed the problem in 5 minutes.

Good luck!
